Removing artifacts with layers??

I shoot a lot of stills for movies. For certain scenes, I was only able to get one frame and unfortunately, I have undesired items in the background (light stand or boom).
I was told I can remove them with layers by brushing them off. Is this true? I have 2 books on layers and they don't have instructions on how to proceed - if this can be done. Any ideas anyone?
Much appreciated.

  Hello Liandra,
In Photoshop you can use the clone tool or healing brush to fix backgrounds. If its a small blemish, the healing tool (looks like a band-aid) will work. Select the tool and then select the size of the area you want the tool to be. On my MAC I use the apple [ to make smaller and apple ] to make bigger or you can use the slider for the diameter size at the top in Photoshop. Then just click over the area you want to fix. If this isn't working you can use the clone tool (same thing with diameter size) and then hold the option key while clicking on an area close to the boom stand (like the sky behind it) and then release the option key and click again on the boom stand and this should cover it up with the sky color you selected. Keep repeating until you have removed the unwanted object.
I use the healing & clone tools a lot for removing spots on the image from a dirty lens, and to cover up unattractive objects.
Give it a go and if you hit a snag - holler back :)
Carlton

Thanks Carlton. I use cloning for small things but I should have said removing objects instead of artifacts. My bad.
I actually need to remove things such as a tugsten/light stand or a deflector screen. I tried cloning but the objects are too big and once blow up poster size, the work would be visible.
I was told that using layers, removing the object and then merging the layers would take care of it but I don't do much with layers and not sure how that would work. Seems complicated :o(

  OK Liandra,
Lemme see if I can remember this off the top of my head since I am not on my MAC with Photoshop in front of me:)
Take the image and then copy & paste it over another image (maybe just a sky photo or an image that you can find that would make a suitable background for the image you are repairing) and this will create a new layer. In the new layer create an empty layer mask then select the brush tool and select white (white to show - Black to hide) and then brush away the area you want to cover and the background image should show through which will cover the boom stand. If you make a mistake, select the black color and brush over the area and it will bring it back.
I hope I have this right ???

BTW - I learned to do this in Lewis Kempers Photoshop Toolbox #1 (Exposure & Color Correction) class. I highly recommend this class. Its one of the best classes I have ever taken and Lewis provides a ton of information.

Thanks Carlton, that makes perfect sense and I've done something similar so I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thanks for your time and info.
And thanks re: the online course suggestion, I've been looking for an interesting one to take. Cheers.
