Photography Question

File usage on another computer

I took some shots for our Vacation Bible Study and gave the church all the photos on a disc. The lady I gave them too was able to unload a very small amount of them (maybe 16-20), and then maybe one at a time. They are unable to download all the photos to their computer. There were approximately 600 photos. I took them in RAW, converted them to jpeg. The files are large. Can you imagine why they are unable to download them? I've considered saving them as smaller files. Do you think that would work? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful!

  Hi Carolyn,
Files from my 1Ds come out as raw files at about 11.4MB but once I convert them to uncompressed 16bit .tif files, they become 62MB files.
I take the 62MB files and go to Image>Mode>8 bit and this will knock them down to about 31MB. I then hit cmnd+Option+I (for image size) (this may be cntl+alt+I for PC) and change from 4200 pixels to 1200 pixels (long side) and then save them as jpegs at a quality of about 10 which should be about 500kb. This should make them small enough for downloading and large enough to clearly see on a monitor.
Using Photoshop, I create an action (resize V) and assign my F5 key and then record my steps of resizing and saving to the specified folder and then "stop record". I do the same for Resize H (V=vertical & H=horizontal) and assign it to my F6 key.
If you are a PC user, there is a nice free download for batch resizing called Irfanview.com
I rarely need to process that many images at once which is why I just use PS & my actions to resize. There are more efficient ways. I think Lightroom2 also has a good process for this but I am not a LR user.
Hope this helps,
Carlton

Thank you for your input - it definitely helps. I do use Lightroom 2 and it does have a good process for resizing multiple files at a time. I want the photos to be good enough quality to print. Do you think they'll be good enough to print if I make them the size you mention here (1200 pixels on the long side)?

  Hi Carolyn,
No, these wont be good enough to print.
What size prints will they need to do ?
I would only resize the pixels from like 4200 to 3500 and save them as .tif if they want to print. These will still be very large files.
With 600 images, are they going to print them all ?
If they only wanted to print 30 or 100 images, they could look at the smaller files and tell you which they wanted prints of and you could only do those.
Another thought is if you had a Zenfolio site, you could upload all the images (sized at just below 24MB) and they could order the prints straight from the Zen site. You would have to set this all up and create a pricelist - look at my site for an example -

and if you do decide to get a Zen site, use my referral code - KFZ-B24-7PG
Get back to me with print size specifics and I will know better which size you will need.
Carlton
