Use the magnifying glass icon to zoom in on the specific spot you want to color. Use the lasso tool (with a feather setting of about 3) to outline the edges of what you want to color. Hold the mouse button down and drag the cursor around the edge, until it meets where you began. Go to Window on the bar across the top of the screen, choose Swatches and pick the color that most closely approximates what you want. Pick the paintbrush to color the area. See "Opacity" on the tools screen? That will vary the intensity of the color. Simple colors, like those of flowers aren't too diffcult. Skin tones are very hard to do. Photoshop is intimidating. Take a class here at Betterphoto or at a community college. Check out library books. Bargain bookstores have books for older versions. The basics are there.

I think an easier way is to take the original photo, use the select tool to outline the area you want to retain color and after selecting it with pen tool, lasso tool or magic wand - copy the area and paste it into a new layer. Then you can take the original image, change it to B&W and then the new layer with the color will be overlaying the B&W image. I did this one this way. Hope this helps, Carlton
