Slave/Master flash I would like to know if it is possible to use my ETTL flash away from the camera (as a slave) and use the flash on my Cannon 50D as the master? I saw someone doing this with their Nikon set-up, and I was thinking of hundreds of ways to use this if it can be done. Thanks a bunch!!! :o)

Wireless flash control is not a built-in feature of EOS cameras. A controller must be connected to the camera's hotshoe. Controllers include the 580EX II, 580EX (discontinued), 550EX (discontinued), MT-24EX, MR-14EX, and ST-E2.

Hello Gretchen, I use the STE2 with my 580EX & 430EX as slaves or use my 580EX as master & 430EX as a slave. There are classes here at BP that teach about strobes. I took a class from John Siskin that was packed with information and John is an excellent instructor & is constantly posting blogs & tips/tricks for using strobes on his site - http://www.siskinphoto.com/ There is also an online publication called Strobist that has lots of tips & tricks - http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/

Hi Gretchen, If you decide you want to get big strobes like the Calumet Traveler or Alien Bees for doing portraits, etc.. Do yourself a favor and take Johns class or know what you need & want. I made the mistake of buying a cheap light kit and it was not powerful enough to perform as I wanted and now it sits unused in the corner of my room. I just wasted $$ because I ended up getting Alien Bees. my .02, Carlton

Is there a hot shoe or adapter for the ETTL strobe that will allow you to connect an "eye" to set it off? On my old studio strobe (and I mean really old) I have an eye on a wire near my subject so that the on camera flash sets it off.

I want to go back to Gretchen's original question. She asked if she could use the internal flash in her camera to trigger an ETTL flash which is mounted OFF the camera. I think there may have been some missunderstanding of her question in the answers given. Sorry, no offence intended. To directly answer her question, the answer is YES, you can do that. The ETTL flash is set off to the side, or other position and the internal flash will trigger it. Not all ETTL flash units may be capable of this function but I suspect most are. Even my Sigma ETTL works flawlessly in this function and has done so with both my previous 20D and current 40D. You do not need to purchase any adapters or controllers. I presume that there would be no difference with the 50D. So save your money unless you're really ready for, and need more elaberate studio lighting. If you need it, fine, it's not necessary for what you're trying to accomplish. Dan
