trouble using extension tubes

Recently I have been trying to get into taking Macro photography and purchased Nikon's 105 f/ 2.8 AF VR lens.
I love the lens and I use both a D2X and Nikon's D700.
I have been trying to use a set of extension tubes on both of my cameras.
When I place the various tubes and then any of my Nikon lenses All I get is total darkness.
I even purchased Nikon's PK-11A 8 MM extension tube in hopes that would help. Now I can at least see the subject I am trying to shoot, but when I snap the photo all I get is a darkness one would see if they had left their lens cap on.
Am I doing something wrong or what?

In the instructions for the 105 f/2.8G VR Macro is this note:
"14. Incompatible accessories
• Auto Ring BR-4 and all models of Auto Extension Ring PK, K Ring and Bellows
focusing attachment."

I don't know why, but I suspect it has to do with your lens being a G-series that requires electronic communication with the camera to operate the aperture. My guess is the extension rings don't have this communication so the lens's aperture is closed or stopped down pretty small when mounted on these rings.
