Lens choices Hi guys, getting ready to make a big purchase. I'm considering the Canon 100-400mm L series IS lens for my Canon 5D. In the near future, my husband and I are getting ready to set off on an adventure by boat (live aboard) for a few years. I want to be able to capture all that we see and be able to bring this home to capitalize on not just for us, but to help support our trip. I currently have a Canon 5D, a Canon 70-200 L series, a Canon 24-70 L series and a Sony Cybershot, monopod, tripods, monitors, external memory drives, etc. My question, finally, what do you think of the 100-400 lens, or is there a better lens for outdoor, wildlife, landscape shots. I know the push pull is awkward, and have heard that it is heavy.....Does Canon have anything else up and coming?? what are your thoughts. Thanks in advance.... for any input!

I love my 100-400mm L IS lens very much. Its about the same weight as my 70-200 f/2.8L IS but the added reach is very nice. I took a couple of recent photos (see Carltons Gallery) of an Emu & a Parrot and they are very sharp. I find that the lens at f/7.1 finds a very sweet spot to get very good detail of the subject and a nice blurred background. One thing to mention is that on my 40D and a 1.4 extender, I lose auto focus ability with this lens but I can live with this. Another thing is that the push/pull design does allow dust particles to be more prevelant so I am sure to keep that lens cloth & blower handy. For the price range, there is no rival in the Canon lens selection. Be sure to turn IS "OFF" when using a tripod. Have fun Linda, you're going to love this lens. Carlton
