Viveza

I recently acquired Viveza and was excited about what I thought were the selection possibilities, but was then quite disappointed that one doesn't seem to be able to save the selection for any other purpose than what Viveza can do--contrast, brightness and colour saturation. The value of Viveza is touted as not having to spend so much time using the selection tools and masks in difficult images with hair feathers, etc. It is also said that noise reduction should be done as a first step before using it. But I almost always use my selection tools for noise reduction, applying Noise Ninja to the background. So, obviously, if I have to make the selection manually anyway, I can do contrast, brightness and saturation regulation right in CS3, using those (often painfully) made selections. So, I'm just wondering why so many people are so excited about it--doesn't everybody use selections for noise reduction? Am I missing something here? Viveza DOES make a new layer with those selections, so I thought if I applied noise reduction only to that layer, it would work as almost like a selection tool. But it didn't--Noise Ninja was applied to the whole image.

Anyway, does anyone know if or how one might transfer the selections that Viveza makes into CS3 so that I can use them for noise reduction?

  Hi Susan,
I looked at Viveza as well and it just didn't look worth the $$. I think it is worth about $50 for what it does. Now that you mention you cannot use the selections for use with other PS tools, I dont think I will even consider it any longer.
This tutorial states that by selecting the brush tool, it will create a new layer mask in PS but it doesn't show if other PS tools can be used on the selected area ??

I watched most of the tutorials on the NIK site and while I think the intelligence of the U Point technology is very good, the minimal options for color/contrast editing seems limiting.
I would love to hear others opinions as well and if it is worth the $150.
Carlton

Thank you! I'd like to hear a number of opinions too! I spend an incredible amount of time selecting, especially when I have multi-colored subject and background, more for noise reduction than anything else--and yet it in reviews it sounded like pros were using and loving it--so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong--don't others select when they remove noise? Often my blur tool just doesn't cut it. So, it has me worried (hopeful actually) that I'm missing something and that there are other ways to selectively remove noise other than a sometimes painful selecting process. That's kind of the point of my question, actually!

Actually Susan, Viveza, which has many uses, is commonly used these days in pros and non-pros, to treat ED and in terms of selection, now is supplied in gel caplets of 10, 20 and 100 mg. I hear it works wonders for those who really need it and with minimal side effects.
Take it light. ;>)
