LENSES FOR CANON 5D I'm thinking about buying a wide angle lens for my Canon 5D. I've narrowed it down to the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8; the Canon 17-40mm f4L USM and the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8. Will all these fit on my 5D and what does everyone recommend? Thanks!

The Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II are for the smaller sensors of cameras like the 50D and 450D. They will not project an image large enough to cover the "full-frame" sensor of the 5D. In the case of the EF-S lens, it won't even mount onto the 5D. The EF 17-40 f/4L USM is an excellent choice for the 5D. If you must have an f/2.8 wide-angle zoom, the only current production autofocus lens for EOS cameras is the EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM II.

Thanks, Jon--It looks like the 16-35 f/2.8L USM 11 is twice as expensive as the 17-40 f4L USM. Is there a manufacturer other than Canon that makes a similiar lens? Also, the reviews I have read since your answer recommend the 17-40 for smaller size sensors. (though they do say it can be used on the 5D) Thanks

Not good as Canon, but I used to have Sigma 17-35 f2.8-4, but I sold it. Happy with 16-35L 1

Hi Barb, I remember reading specs for either a Tamron, Sigma or Tokina 12-24mm lens that was supposed to work on a full frame Canon. I'll try to find it. I have the 17-40mm and am very happy with this lens. It has been drenched in waterfalls and used heavily the last 4 years and is still going strong. I have a 77mm B&W Kaeseman circular polarizer I use with this lens quite a bit for water related images. I am considering the 16-35mm upgrade but more likely I will get the 15mm prime lens next. Cheers, Carlton

OK - I found it - its the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM and though it works on full frame Canons, the reviews are not very good. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/302698-REG/Sigma_200101_12_24mm_f_4_5_5_6_AF_Lens.html If you will be doing a lot of landscape get the Canon 17-40 or 16-35 because the L lenses are so much better and you will not be looking to upgrade in 6 months. I have Sigma 12-24, but it is not good enough as my 16-35, so that I ignored it, either 16-35 or 17-40

Thanks, Carlton. What kind of camera do you have? Is it the 5D? Also, I remember you from one of the Better Photo classes I took. I like your work a lot. Barb

Thanks, Tareq. The 16-35 sounds like a good lens. I'll definately not get the Sigma lens. Barb
