How to Lighten up shots w/XSi

Most of my shots taken with the Rebel XSi seem to need some brightening.
Could it be the exposure setting?
I'm shooting in mostly P/Tv/Av mode.
I have noticed some other's who submit their XSi pics seem to be somewhat deep toned, also! Would it help to set the High-tone priority? Appreciate any input. Sincerely LLS

Leslie: Try this when using P mode or AV mode or TV mode.

Set +2/3 exposure compensation; your photos will be brighter.

(While pressing the +/- button, rotate the dial to the right. Two clicks = +2/3 compensation. i.e. the pointer in the scale will be two notches over from the center. The center is the default: zero exposure compensation.)
