I have the D80 and I love it!
Also have the Nikon 18-200 AF VR, which is my favorite all-around lens. I've recommended this lens to many friends who were just purchasing their first Nikons (advised them to avoid the other "kit" lenses). Later, you may want to branch out and get more specific prime lenses, as your photography interests need. But for an all-around lens, you can't go wrong with the Nikon 18-200. It's compact, the VR works great--even from a moving vehicle, and the optics are fantastic. I had considered Tamron's 18-250, but after reading comparisons, I'm glad I chose Nikon.
