Why does off camera flash fire too late

So I have 2 flashes. A 580EXII set as master and a 430EX set as slave. The 580 is connected to my Canon 40D via a pc-male to pc-male sync cable. When I take a shot, the 580 fires but the 430 doesn't fire until it's too late. The shutter speed is only 1/50. I never had this problem when the 580 was mounted to the camera's hot shoe and the 430 set to slave. Could you tell me if the sync cord causing this problem? Also... with the master flash connected via the sync cord, the flash needs to be set to ETTL in order for it to trigger... but on the camera, it will fire even when set to manual. This leads me to think it's the sync cord again. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

A PC-sync cord simply tells the connected flash to fire. It does not carry any of the communication needed to operate in E-TTL, activate the AF Assist light, or operate the Zoom. With the PC connection the 580EX II should be able to operate OK in Manual output mode and Manual External Metering. It may try to function in E-TTL (normal and wireless), but it won't have the proper communication with the camera to do it right.

What is needed for the 580EX II to be off-camera and still master controller for the 430EX is either the [a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=oc-e3&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fcatalog.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t"]Canon OC-E3 off-camera shoe cord, the discontinued Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2, or similar E-TTL compatible conntecting cord from [a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/524499-REG/Dot_Line_RS_0445_Off_Camera_E_TTL_II_Shoe.html">third party makers.

d'oh! bad links. Crossing my fingers that this works:

  Hey Jon,
Thanks for the reply. I bought the sync cord thinking it was a temporary cheap solution for my on location lighting setup. I'm getting tired of packing up and lugging my entire strobe set with me, unpack and then repack again afterwards. Guess I got the wrong cord. So after seeing the links you provided me... the question is do I want to keep buying small things and nickle and dime'ing myself to death or do I just skip all this and go for the pocket wizard setup. Hmmmmmm. Thanks again.

  Hi David,
I use the Canon STE2 transmitter with my 580 & 430 and have had no problems with them firing in sync.
The new Pocket Wizards will work with TTL and I will be able to shoot my speedlights & Alien Bees from the same transmitter... I will be buying one soon :)
