Photography Question

Tiia Vissak

Judging and submitting

Usually only photos submitted in one day are given EFPs on a certain day but on some days, judges rush and judge photos submitted in several days in one day (like just happened). Is it sure that they really had time to look at every photo or maybe they skipped some? I usually do not resubmit my photos, but last December I resubmitted 6 and got 3 EFPs for them. I've read in the forum that some BP members have even got Finalists for some photos that did not even receive an EFP the month before. Several people complained that no photos submitted on December 31st received EFPs, and this is not good for the contest: every photo deserves to be looked at in full format (not just as a thumbnail; some thumbnails are not very promising, but actually the photo may be very good), not depending on the time and date it was submitted: this is not a lottery. So, maybe BP could add a sign of some sort to the photo if it was looked at by the judges (it could be only made visible to the submitter) and if the photo was not looked at, then maybe it would be possible to submit it once again not counting the 1 photo per day limit?

Also, as some people travel a lot and sometimes it is not easy to get online, it would be very nice if it could be possible to submit photos to the contest in advance (to determine that this is my photo for today, this for tomorrow etc and then the system would submit it on the determined day) or submit 1 photo per day on average (all 31 in 1 day and none for the rest of the month, 7 today and none for the next 6 days etc). This would increase the total number of photos submitted every month.

I got your point Tiia but I think that they don't want more pictures entering the contest, first Free Gallery owners can't enter in the contest anymore and like Jim said in another thread the main purpose of the site is learning and join a Prestige community and not the contest.
Jim's words:
"The Contest
Whenever I've met fellow photographers while travelling, they have often talked to me about BetterPhoto as if it's a contest site. In fact, people frequently express the misconception that our contest is our "bread and butter". This is far from the truth. While it's fun, maintaining such a prestigious, high-quality contest is a costly endeavor. And we have always seen our core identity and core strength as something much more than the contest. The contest is just one part of the overall BetterPhoto idea.

So now we have decided to make it obvious to each and every newcomer to BetterPhoto that this site is about one thing and one thing only:

BetterPhoto is an encouraging community for learning and improvement."

One last thing, yes they pass good pictures when they rush and they didn't looked the December 31 entries just picked for POTD, I believe it happened in 2007 too.

Tiia, I'm not certain the judges are "rushing" if they scan over a couple of days of photos in one day. Maybe they just dedicate more time to the task, or assign a few extra folks to help out if they get back-logged. I do know that judging is subjective. I have resubmitted many photos, including the Eagle/Flag shot from last month, that didn't get an EP the first time, but went on to get a silver or gold medal. It's a subjective thing and I don't hold that against BP.

If you have a trusted friend, you can give them your log-in info and they can enter photos into the contest from the "Your Photos" section. I have done this for friends, and vice versa, when travelling.

Well said Ken, that's what I do some weekends that don't have time to turn on the PC. And for overlooked pictures I believe in resubmitting power, yesterday enter again my December 31 entry, and the last month Grand Prize Winner it was a resubmitted.

I agree with Tiia, I think BP judges do get in a hurry sometimes and many images well deserving EFPs get overlooked. Since we can't control BP,s judging process, our only option is to resubmit.

I save my favorite shots that got nowhere and resubmit them in February. I always have more than enough for the entire month, and since there's not much to shoot around here in the winter anyway, it's a good time to do it.

Yes, resubmit! It's easy to do. :) As Elida mentioned, my GP winner was a resubmission. I just think with thousands of entries, it would be easy to overlook many worthy images, no matter how hard you try to catch them all.

Sometimes I wonder if they just don't skip entire pages. They just passed up my best of January, one of my most popular shots. It's really easy to get bummed out...and as for the 31st of December, it's impossible to believe that of all the people who hang out on this thread, NOBODY got and EFP????? My resubmit folder has just overran February..

I also resubmit in February. I might throw in a couple of recent shots but it's a great time to give your favorite shots another try in the contest.
