Photography Question

Andrea R. Siebert

muslin backdrops

so, I have had some unsuccesful buys when it comes to Muslin cloth in the past. the fabric seems cheap-but then again, what did I expect when I paid a cheap price? I think i'm just learning, but wasting money, which is not what I want to do.
So, my question I need answered is: Where can I find a quality muslin cloth (i need dyed-not painted so I can machine wash it) Can you give me some pointers from your experience where the best place to buy muslins are? There are so many stores online, but which one do I trust will deliver what I need?
I need quality material, not cheap thin-sheet-like stuff.
thanks!
andrea

The best places I've found to get muslin are theatrical supply houses in places likw Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles and San Francisco. Get enough material to do some expedrimenting on dying, rolling, washing, etc. Bandhphotovideo.com is another good source although they offer some cheap versions to beware of as you've discovered.

Good muslin backgrounds seem to last forever. I had one that went 22 years before it went kaput.
Take it light.

the question is, 'how do I know if they are a cheap version?"

If you look at them when they come out of the machine I'll bet you can see whether they are "a cheap version" or not.

well, obviously I would know whether they were cheap or not when I get them, i'm just wondering if there is a way to tell (by description by the product online)before I buy...
i'll check craig's list...

What part of "the best places to get..." don't you understand, Andrea? Perhaps you don't know but you get what you pay for. Theatrical supply houses sell reliable, useful products to (you may not have guessed this one) THE THEATRICAL INDUSTRY.

And btw, that wasn't your question initially. ;>) But to answer it, people usually know cheap by the price, among other things. Ponder that for awhile.
