Photography Question

Joseph M. Kolecki

Camera Storage

Hello,

I have a question about storage. So I have a D200 and a D300, both of which I keep stored in my camera bag. Well, the bag was placed against an outside wall and of course, like many others, I keep my heat set around 60. To make a long story short, the bag got very cold, the camera's inside were also cold to the touch (not frozen, but as if they were in the fridge). Do you think this was damaging to the cameras at all? I'm assuming cold storage is not the best idea in the world, but how much damage could it really do?

Thanks for your time.

  Hi Joseph,
I am sure there are manufacturers recommendations on this subject but I keep my Canon camera's in a camera bag or my Lowepro camera backpack inside of my computer room. I live in the pacific northwest and often encounter cold, rain, snow & more rain. I have had my camera & lens absolutely soaked from a sudden downpour and after letting the camera & lens air dry for a couple of days, I cleaned them off and they both work fine. The Canon/Nikon DSLR's seem to be pretty tough and durable. The only time I am really concerned is when I go from 1 extreme temp/humidity to another. If I am going from a warm room out into the cold outdoors, I will let the camera & lens acclimate a while to prevent the lens & sensor from fogging up. I sometimes use a plastic bag to prevent fogging while the camera/lens warms or cools to continue shooting.
My .02 - Carlton

"...like many others, I keep my heat set around 60."

Can we get a show of hands?

  I've got 2 hands, sir!

I keep my 450D right beside me, on top of Mr. PC. Perhaps I ought to keep it in my bag - I'm lazy.

My Eos 3 is stored somewhere, but I did take the battery out - honest guv! :)

Frank.

  HEAT???
What is that?

I have an oil burner system and it stays off all winter...only kicking on when the temperature on my thermostat falls below the minimum setting (56 degrees or so).
When we're home, we use portable space heaters and electric blankets to keep warm.

I have a D300 and it too gets quite cool where I have it stored.
As long as you top off the charge on your batteries before a shoot, you should have no problem.

This is what the Nikon D300 manual says about temperatures.
