Photography Question

image sharpness

hi I am a newbie to photography my question is when I am viewing my shots on a canon 40d it looks like a sharp well taken picture but if I zoom in on a picture it seems to be blurry is this normal cause I am starting to think that the shots im taking are not as good as I thought.

If you are reviewing pictures on the 40D's LCD, I think it's normal. To speed operation and save memory, the image displayed for review in the LCD is a low resolution thumbnail rather than the actual saved file.

  Hello Don,
If you are a newbie I would highly recommend taking an Exposure class. Learn about f-stops, ISO, shutter speeds and how they relate and work together.
There are a few classes here at Better Photo.
Most unsharp images are due to either too slow shutter speed or DOF (depth of field) or poor mechanics. Proper Exposure is the single most important aspect of photography IMO.
My .02 - Carlton

  Don,

The LCD display on your 40D is 230,000 pixels; so as you zoom in for a better look the image will degrade. Many of the higher end DSLR's have gone to a hi-resolution LCD, The Nikon D-300 as an example boasts a 920,000 pixel display which really helps when one needs to scrutinize a pic they just shot.

all the best,

Pete
