How to recover lost photos

I have recently lost all the images I had saved on my external hard drive. I did not delete these, and no one else has access to my computer / hard drive. Fortuntately I have copies of some saved on other media but there are a large number that are lost with no copies. Anyway they can be recovered; or, do I just "chalk this up" to a learning experience? Thanks - John

Well, John, if they could recover 95% of the data on a harddisk that crashed with the Space Shuttle, a few years ago, I'd say you still have a few options! So don't despair or give up just yet.

You need 'data recovery'. Go get data recovery software from http://www.versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=data+recovery&srchArea=windows&submit=Go, for Windows, or from http://www.versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=recovery&srchArea=macosx&submit=Go, for MacOSX, and give it a shot.

If that doesn't work you may want a pro data recovery outfit to try. At a fee! They usually deliver the goods.
But before you send out your HD to them, make a backup of it. Of any and all, probably garbled data that's on it.
So methinks you've got your work cut out for you.

Good luck!
