Problem with Quantaray MS-1

The Quantaray MS 1 slave flash is not synchronized with my Canon 30D with 580EX Flash. I turned off the Custom Functions for modeling lamp & for automatic focus assist beam on the camera & 580 EX flash, but it still won't work. I see the slave flash go off, so I'm assuming it's going off before the actual shutter opens meaning it evidently goes off when some type of pre-flash emits. What am I missing?

Thanks, Pam.

Maybe? You got red eye reduction on?

580EX in E-TTL auto flash exposure mode fires a low-power preflash for metering just before the shutter opens, then fires again with the proper flash power just after the shutter opens. Both flashes occur very close together and are often percieved as a single flash, but the slave sensor on the MS-1 is going to react and fire with the preflash before the shutter opens. To get them to work together, you'll have to set the 580EX for a manual output level (M 1/1, M 1/2, etc.). But then you'll have to set the exposure completely manually by adjusting the flash output and/or the lens aperture. The proper combination is obtained by
applying the guidenumber formula, or by trial and error.
