Horse & Dog

Does anyone have ideas on how to photograph a family with their horse and dog and possibly incorporating Christmas into the picture? Can I get some examples of pictures?

Hi JoAnn,

I'd see if I could find an interesting background, like a see-through landscape, and shoot the subjects as a tight group standing, a kid in front holding up a foot high Christmas tree with lights on (batteries), from tripod with a longish exposure and medium aperture. Think oil painting.
NO flash! Nor large reflectors.

I'd shoot RAW and bracket. Then do HDR/tonemapping.

Have fun!

Oops, forgot:

When the sun is low, at an oblique angle, and golden. So that would make it late afternoon.

  Hi JoAnn,

With little effort you can go to the library and leaf through books on horses. Concentrate on equestrian magazines, particularly the advertisements they sport. As a general rule, quality advertisers never fail when it comes to tasteful and otherwise well done images.

This research can also be undertaken from home using the internet. One of the best sources is Google Images. Just access by typing in “horses”.

Best of luck,

Alan Marcus
