A Good Lens for Boxing

Looking for a lens for photographing boxing matches. I shoot with a Nikon D200, and Nikon's 50mm 1.4 and Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 lenses. I don't like the results - too dark. I need to zoom from wide for close-ups and tight for shooting across the ring, and still have enough light and speed to get the good shot. I shoot at ring side, which makes the ropes an issue.

  Hello Jorge,
What ISO setting are you shooting at? I would think the 70-200 would work for your needs (being able to zoom) if you have your ISO high enough. The 50mm f/1.4 should work great - I use mine for very low light clubs and concerts with no problems although I do have to push my ISO to 800 or 1600 sometimes.

Personally, I don't like boxing with any lens. Rather, I prefer to use the lens itself as a handle and hittem' with a good, solid body blow from something like a Nikon F-2 and MD3 winder. I like the 105mm Nikkors for handles but they also make GREAT sports lenses when you're working up close and personal.

I was going to be clever, but I see several people beat me to the punch.

Hi, Jorge. If you're able to shoot ringside, I'd use a wider zoom and shoot the boxers when they're against the ropes.

I would suggest a lens that zooms from wide to closeup. Get something that allows tight shots too.

Make sure you have enough light left over so the speed will give you a good shot.

The "Rope" issue was on the Calif ballot, but I believe it was a proposition...Maybe Mark knows?
