Photography Question

Celeste McWilliams

Using Filters/Effects in Photoshop Elements 5

My question is about my options when using various filters and effects in Photoshop Elements 5.

If I access any of the filters through the Filter Gallery menu, I can make adjustments to settings. For example, if I choose the Sponge option from the Artistic gallery, I am able to adjust brush size, definition, and smoothness.

However… If I access effects through the Artwork & Effect menu (on the right column of my page), I cannot adjust any settings within the option I choose. For example, if I choose the following: Special Effects option, then Photo Effects, the Image Effects, and then Pencil Sketch, I cannot adjust any pencil sketching settings. Or, am I able to adjust them somehow?

  Celeste,
You can adjust settings if there are settings available for the effect -- some of the effects are not non-destructive (i.e., they actually change the pixels in the image). Pencil Sketch is a one-shot deal which does indeed act directly on the image content. Other things like Frames which can be adjusted will have a Layer Styles icon (looks like a flower). Try double-clicking the Layer Style icon for the effect if one appears and you'll be able to make adjustments.

OK?
