Photography Question

In-camera image processing

hello,
I've heard that one should never use the B&W feature of a camera, and save it for post-processing. I was wondering if this was the same case for the rest of the in-camera image processing features.

On my camera, I have the option of using Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Night view, Sunset, B&W, Adobe RGB. I can also adjust from -3 to +3 the contrast, saturation and sharpness. Should I use these?
Thx in advance
-Cassie

It's a trade-off, Cassie:

In-camera editing is convenient but lacks all kinds of controls and possibilities for finetuning. And on the camera's LCD screen you can't really see what you're doing.

On PC editing – a.k.a. post processing – is less convenient, but provides tons more control and finetuning options, on a big screen!

The difference will be very visible in the end results. Try it. See if it's worth it to you. As always the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Have fun!

Thx once again. I see your point. And I don't know what D-Range optimizer is either..something to do with automatically correcting the brightness of an image (with contrasted images...i think). Not sure. Thx so much for your help. :)

Thanks, Cassie. I know what Dynamic Range Optimization is ('DRO', a.k.a. High Dynamic Range Imaging, HDRI; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDRI).

It's just that your camera manufacturer's unfortunate mutilation of that concept into "D-Range" – easily mistaken for "derange"... – made me chuckle!
