Stock Agency Websites

I was looking into stock agency websites & found that Fotolia requires your SSN in order to register. I'm a little hesitant to give that out on a website. Has anyone had any experience with Fotilia and is asking for an SSN normal procedure for stock agency websites?

Thanks!

The likely reason, aside from identification purposes, is if they provide you with any income they can 1099 the income statement to the IRS.
Yes, stock agencies ask for SSN's although I can't attest to the legitimacy of the one you mentioned.
Take it light. ;>)

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for your reply, Mark. Has anyone had any experience with Fotolia?

There are many stock sites out there, Julia! And they don't ask for your SSN. You can try Shutterstock, Shutterpoint, Istock. I don't know anything about Fotolia.

  Hi Julia,

I am a regular submitter to Fotolia and they are a bona fide microstock agency. Fotolia is my number 5 earner, and Shutterstock is number one.

There have been some problems in the past with people uploading other photographer's work as their own, and this may have contributed to some of the agencies wanting more I.D. of the submitters. Also, many of us request our earnings to be directly deposited to PayPal... I don't have a problem with them wanting this information, I see it as an added protection for me (as a photographer), if anything. Fotolia is a very credible agency and they market worldwide.

I have earned 4X more from Shutterstock, and I pretty much submit the same portfolio to all the agencies. Click on the referral link below if you or anyone else wants more information. (I 'might' get 3cents/photo if anyone signs up under me, but the photographer who signs up would NEVER lose any money... it is a simple referral link).

I started with 3 photos in April 2005, and now have ~ 300 photos online and have earned $17,809.13 and counting...

Submit Photos to Shutterstock and make $$$!

You can check out my Better Photo gallery to see the type of photos that have sold.
