Hi Vicki, I dont know if this would suffice for several second exposures or heavy lenses. Lugging a tripod around is a pain but I still believe that the willingness to carry & use a tripod is what separates many photographers. One of the instructors here at BP uses his own creation of the string tripod and you have to love the simplicity and size of the design. my .02 - Carlton
