Question about Sigma wide angles I'm thinking of purchasing Sigma 10-20mm lens for Canon. I head that Sigma 12-24mm lens does not have a barrel distortion but I'm not sure about 10-20mm. If somebody can share information, I'd really appreciate it.

The wider the angle, the greater the (barrel) distortion. So that that Sigma 10-20mm is described as not having barrel distortion is hard to believe.

The shorter the focal length, the more difficult it is to design without barrel distortion, but it is not impossible. With zooms it is even harder to eliminate barrel/pincushion distortions at all focal lengths, so the designers choose a compromise such that there is little distortion at some part of the zoom range and allow greater distortion at others. The lens reviews at photozone.com measure the amount of barrel/pincushion distortion. See for example their Sigma 10-20 review and Sigma 12-24 review.

Thank you W.S. and Jon for your feed backs! Seems like certain degree of distortion is inevitable for any wide angle lens. Thank you Jon for the useful links. I compared both. I see what you mean by "the designers choose a compromise." I guess users have to choose a compromise too. But one good thing is, user can correct distortions with an editing software. Again, thank you both! I really appreciate your responses!!

I use the Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens. I don't have any complaints, but in all fairness, have not used other lenses for comparison.

Thank you very much Ken for your input. It's good to hear from an actual user. Seeing your breathtaking landscape images, I can tell how good the lens is.
