Photography Question

Alex T. Mizuno

Looking for a grad ND filter

I'm looking for a resin 3 stop grad ND filter for a 10-20mm wide angle lens (filter size 77mm). I called up Sing-Ray and asked their price for this particular lens. Their price is $160. I know I can trust their quality but if possible, I'd like to get a less pricey filter. If somebody can give me a reference, I really appreciate it.

Hi Alex,

Cokin has an ND filter range that is much, MUCH cheaper than that. Even if you have to add a filter holder:

Have fun!

Alex, I have the Cokin filter system with GNDs and a polarizer. The 10-20 will vignette at the wider focal lengths with the regular cokin filter holder.

So Alex, I have to ask you, what is it about Sing-Ray's actual quality that you trust? How bout B+W, Hoya, Tiffen, Schneider, or my favorites, HiTech. One reason I like the Hitech over systems like Cokin, is the one-size fits all without vignetting. Their holders are 105mm with mounting/adapter rings available to fit every size of lens down to the smallest size and largest wide-angle.

I've also never had a problem in the quality using these things for over 15 years or so. Cokins are great, I just like HiTech better based on the variety of filters available, contrast, special effects, color enhancements AND of course, a variety of fixed or varigated N.D. filters.

Nice thing about the larger systems is that you can buy them now and grow into them as your format, lenses and equipment changes over the years. All you need to do is change mount rings.

HiTechs, among other brands, are sold by B&H at good prices or check these guys out at the Filter Connection:
http://www.2filter.com/ Also, remember the size of the smaller specialty kit systems may not be suited to the sizes of other manufacturers as the larger size 105mm filter rigs are. Might want to check that out before you get into them.
Take it light ;>)
Mark

You think? I mentioned it so he was aware of the fact that the P series causes vignetting.

Actually David, I left my computer for about an hour and a half this morning after I started responding to your note before the vignetting issue came up and posting my response after that.

Oh, and you might check out the Singh Ray prices, among other ND, etc., filters at B&H. They're a lot less than full retail which is what the manufactuer will quote ya.

Sorry for the confusion Mark, the comment was not to you. It was to the unhelpful comment above yours. Your answer was helpful and well thought out, as usual.

Oh DAVID !!! You make me blush. LOL! Thanks very much though amigo ;>))

BTW, Hitech among others, makes a bunch of different types of graduated blue sky enhancement filters that work well and in place of ND filters for darkening overly bright skies. Makes them look more Ektachrome-like. Let me know if you need the numbers for that series.
Thanks again.
M

Than you so much guys!! Thank you for all your references you gave! I have checked all your recommendations.

Mark: I said I can trust Sing-Ray because more than a couple good photographers recommended me Sing-Ray.

I'm a bit confused about the Cokin system. Their Grad ND filters are listed as ND2, ND4 and ND8. Do they indicate stops? I checked their prices in B&H. They are more affordable than Sing-Ray.

Hitech filters from Filter Connetion are even more affordble. They are listed as 85/P ND Graduates 107mm but are they resin filters?

And if Cokin P holder causes vignetting at the wider end, is there a holder that does not for 10-20mm lens?

Again, I really appreciate all you guys for your sincere advises!!!

Alex, there are a couple of Cokin options. Look at the X and Z series filters setups. They are larger than P, so they should avoid vignetting.

I have been researching this as well, since I have purchased the 10-20mm. The Cokin Z is 4" (100mm x 100mm), so it should also fit the Hi-tech filters. The Cokin X is 130mm x 170mm. A larger area, but I don't know of other filters that fit it. There might be, I just haven't found them yet.

Thank you again David! Your info is very helpful. I'll look into the Cokin Z and X filter holders.
