The II has shortened cycling time (~20% improvement claimed by Canon), a more robust metal foot with dust/moisture seals and rubber boot, and an improved locking lever replaces the screw-down tightening wheel. The II also adds a non-TTL auto-thyrister mode, and is fully integrated with the on-camera Flash Menu of the latest EOS models (1D III, 40D, 1Ds III, Rebel XSi/450D and Rebel XS/1000D). With the 580EX, the Flash Menu on these cameras can set things like 2nd curtain sync and FEC, but the custom functions would have to be set on the speedlite.

Thanks jon, so which one would you recommend? I'm thinking of buying one next week, but want to make sure I get the right one. I have a Canon EOS350D

I only have obvious advice. ;-) If you have to have the latest, with an eye toward a new body in the future, then go for the 580EX II. If you want a terrific speedlight at a more economical price, get the original.
