Metering Problem

I have a recurring problem in a semi-lit church with strong lights that come down to the middle of the stage. So, when I try to take a picture of my bride, her dress is blown out white and the rest is fine. The lights that shine down only on the stage seem to over drown her and I've tried compensating with different settings and nothing seems to fix it without making the whole picture dark. This then makes my iso jump to 1600 and gives me grainy pictures. Can someone give me suggestions to try and fix this, I'm unsure of the fix.

thanks

This is one of those (sic)situations where I use my dinosaur Gossen Lunapro Light meter and camera set manually

  Chris,

Many lighting problems have no real solution, unless you set up light modifiers and external strobes. This is often impractical, so we accept the fact that we can't always get what we want. Mic Jagger was right afterall. :)
