Have your photos published and get paid

Global Photo Diary (www.globalphotodiary.com) has just been launched. Global Photo Diary is a free photo sharing and photo hosting website that aims to provide a photo diary or journal of the world as captured by you. Upload your photos, get your friends to vote for them and when we have a full years pictures for each of the countries, we will use the most voted for photos to publish a coffee table photo diary for each of the countries. We will also publish the diaries in electronic format using digital photo frames. The most voted for picture from each country will be used on the front cover. 20% of the profits from the sales of the books and the digital photo frames will be divided equally between all those whose photographs are used.

The photo’s can be of anything that reflects the daily life in your country or a country you visited including family, friends, animals, scenery, nature, buildings, sport or even your 5 year old nephews birthday party. We are looking for photos from professionals and amateurs and as the public will vote for the photos everyone will have an equal chance. Photos can be taken with any camera from the most expensive to a cell phone.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....why does this sound a lot like the beginning of another "endless journey"?? Call me crazy but this "photo sharing" seems to be yet another way to separate newbies from their work without payment of a fee and then use the work later for unlicensed stock. And/or buy a coffee table book? Yep. Uhuh.
Good luck in your new adventure Jon. BTW, who gets to use the work while your friends are in the "voting" process?
M.

Well, Mark, since they have the right to do anything they want with the photo as soon as it's uploaded to the site, I guess they get to use the work. :-)

From the rules:

"3. Although you own the copyright to any photo that you might have taken, by placing the photograph on this site, you give us full and exclusive rights to use that photograph for any reason whatsoever anywhere in the world and for as long as we like. Don’t like that, don’t put it on here."

It never ceases to amaze me how many people give away their work so others can profit.

Not only do they want to use any photo for FREE, they are getting FREE advertisement on another companies website.

I see they are new to BP today. TACKY is their middle name. Hope BP takes this down.

NOT WISE are the ones who go to that site and download any images to it.

  Hi Mark

Its not my friends who will vote but anyone who wants. We are trying to give people a chance to showcase their work and possibly get it printed. If they then make some money out of it great. This is also not only for professionals but for anyone even someone using a cell camera. The idea is to create a daily photo diary of different places. Obviously we dont expect professionals who make a living out of their photography to give away their work but the might take a picture of something while they are out and about that just reflects a facet of life which they want to share.

If we had wanted to use other people work to make money we would bury the fact in lots of legalise like Flick etc do but we put it in plain english as Susan has pointed out.

Sarah we are not here for free advertising but thought that some people might like the idea of seeing some of their work published.

This is not some big money making venture but something I am doing in my spare time at my own cost as I thought some photographers might like to use it. If BP want to take this down then they must feel free to do so.

You ARE getting FREE advertising. If you wanted to advertise your website you should have gone through BP's main office.

AND the excuse of "doing (it)in my spare time at my own cost" is not an excuse to advertise here for free.

this thread is in blantent violation of BP's stated rules...

So, Jonathan, I must presume you won't mind when people blantently violate your rules on your site.

David the terms state that you may not use this forum to to send BP visitors to other sites to purchase photos. The site I have done is not in anyway competition to this one which is why I did not think they would mind. In fact the site that I have done might hopefully help some starting photographers to showcase their work. If the BP admins dont like this thread then they are quite entitled to remove it.

No way! I can't imagine anyone agreeing to give any site "exclusive rights" unless they are getting $$$ out of the deal. Good luck!

When you put photos on facebook, flickr etc you give them the same rights, they just bury the fact under pages and pages of "legalise". These are the pictures and people we are aiming at but at least we are out in the open about it. Like I have said before, we are not interested in your excellent work that you would normally sell. All we want is pictures that reflect life as people see it, a photo of a cat climbing up a tree or a fire engine being washed after putting out a fire, people on their way to work, the sunset over an interesting building.

I don't have photos online with either of those sites, but as I read and understood the TOS at flickr contributors grant Yahoo "royalty-free and non-exclusive license(s)" as applicable then they go on to define what's applicable. I wouldn't knowingly give anyone exclusive rights to my photos. I've refused to enter magazine and newspaper contests that had rules like that attached to them.

I wish you luck though.
