July 2008 EFP Discussion

Happy July to everyone! If you are celebrating a Holiday tomorrow, have fun and BE SAFE. The ER is not a lot of fun and I'm pretty sure they won't let you take pictures there....LOL.

There will be a lot of discussion on the contest changes and how that relates to EFPs. I am as anxious as everyone else to see how that plays out.

Please visit the thread Jim started for additional discussion of the contest changes at:

http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=32565

Also, don't forget Cheri's thread (EFP Watch for June #4) for posting your EFPs as you receive them (I hope we still are?):

http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=32550

As always, I look forward to hanging out with ya!

Oh crapola!!!! I totally forgot about a new idea I had!!

The contest countdown was always referred to as "Cocktails and Chocolate" which is just fabulous!! Better than the Oscars anyday.

I was going to give this thread the same type of permanent name:

"CHEERS AND TEARS" - EFP discussion for July 2008...lol

After all, everyone here has a pretty good sense of humor :)

I like to pre judge the EFPs. If I get there before the judge, I am going to "predict" if the photo IMO will be a pick. That way I can participate in "predicting" what the judge will choose. I may be wrong most of the time, but usually I will hit on some. Have a good 4th.

Susan, I love the "cheers and tears" title. Thanks for sharing the other threads so we are better informed. Right now I am strongly in the TEARS corner. No EFP's since June 4! I'm devastated!! I was very lucky though because I decided to buy the "Basic" gallery right before the price went up. Whewww! I'm here for the long haul because I love the people here. I'm sure it will all work out in the long run.

Djoanne, that is such a neat idea. I'll tell you, offering critique is often one of the best ways to expand your vision, which will only improve your own art. I don't find it easy to do, but then, when is growth ever really comfortable? Some folks in a photo group I belong to (and have been absent from lately...boohoo!!) will often look at each members submissions for the month, then pick their favorite from each. This was so much fun and it was always interesting to see who was right on with their picks! Now, to try and predict the judges, well, I say go for it! What better way to expand your vision and your own work by attempting to see through others eyes!!! Good on you!

Elida, there is a different, more accurate way to pronounce Tequila..... To kill ya!!!!!! So stick with your chocolate. At least there are health benefits. That is, until they decide tomorrow that chocolate will kill you too! lol

Karen, I too love the cheers and tears. After all, that is what the discussion is about. I've been where you are and no doubt will be again! Most others I've ever heard from have gone through the same. There are so many variables in the judging process here at BP. There are the images that BP tends to favor and those they don't, there are different judges with different tastes at different times on different days! I think the best barometer to go by is your own!! If you really can't figure out what you are "missing" ask someone. There are so many here more than willing to lend you their "eye" if you need it.

Dang, there are so many questions in the air right now. Will there still be EFP's, Finalists, 2nd place and so on. I hope that perhaps the contest will see fewer entries and that will improve the judging capabilities. But then, if they eliminate Finalists and 2nd Place, well I'd be a goner, since those are my only "realistic" goals at this time :)

Thank you, Susan. I was thinking of a way that viewers could participate in the judging. Who could be offended if we said EFP potential before the judge? I think it would sit better than to rate a photo 10, 8, 7, etc. I would hope others would join me. Just go to "recent entries" and start "judging".

Susan, I wrote to BP to ask if a contest entry couldn't remain on the same page instead of being pushed back. That way you could keep track of which page you were on. The way you need to do it now is start on the last page and work forward to where the judges haven't been. BP needs to put in a search for the page # of contest entries so you wouldn't have to go through them all every time. I think it gives one a good idea what the judges go through to do first picks. I don't intend to go all the way and pick a winner....only first picks. We could call it PEP...predicted editor's pick. You see a lot of great photos this way.

PEP, I love it :) It's a great acronym for peer review too, cause if you get a pick it would sorta pep you up! (no I haven't hit the tookillya yet).

Sharon, I tried the new gallery but it still has the bugs. I won't like it if we can't see the badges cause then we'd have to cancel these threads! So I will just have to be patient like everyone else :)

Joanne Kramer
I started PEPs so I'll attempt to explain. If you read above here is where I first started to talk about peer's pre judging if a photo, in their opinion, might get an EFP. You can go to Contest, Recently submitted, and a certain category that interests you. Then just start looking at the pages and see if you can predict which photos will get EFP. I just type in PEP....peer editor pick. later when the EFPs come out by the "real" judges, you can see if you "judged" correctly. You don't hurt anyone's feelings with a rating, and you don't have to leave a lengthy comment. At least someone knows you like their photo and saw it in the contest. I hope that explains what I would like to see happen here for more peer input.

I think "favorites" could easily serve the peer picks concept, however, what's missing is any BP page to let people know what images are the top fav submissions of the current contest month ... right now, one can see a list of all time favs, but, obviously that favors pics that have been up a long time and most likely contest winners (would expect, not having checked.)

Oh thank goodness Djoanne. I thought it was the next "change" BP was handing down. Actually it's the next thing I expect to change. We'll be voting on each others pictures and it will turn into a complete popularity contest. UGH!!!

This is second guessing the judges...if they do EFPs. The Editors have the final and only say so it won't be a popularity contest. If it were, I wouldn't win that's for certain. LOL

I love my Daisy Refresher photo. If I don't get at least an EFP soon, I will be in shock. I did have a gallery full of EFP and then deleted them all to have a fresh start. And now I'm unable to get one back. One thing I spend too much time here, but what the heck, I'm retired.

  Thanks Sharon!

Now if I don't get working on my pics I'll have to take up writing catchy jingles or thread titles for a hobby...lol

I think Cary said something a little ways back about Djoanne's PEP idea. The Favorites had/has limitations, like you mentioned. Also, you can't tell who made your pic a fav, like you can when someone chooses you as a Fav Photog. And then there's the "current" entry issue. Tell you what tho, if BP could make that work, it would be really cool. Unless there is a flip side to that, which I'm sure there is, I probably haven't thought of it yet...lol.

Sorry getting back late. Where the heck have I been?? Just sent personal emails out to Karen and Sandy but glad to read on to learn Susan helped Karen with her Egret (sorry don't know my birds very well do I VBG) Karen you did a beautiful job on it too. And if Susan ever wants to help me I'm ready to listen anytime. VBG
Sandy I totally agree with Jessica. Re-submit because that is just a lovely wildlife capture.
So boo-hoo to those who should have gotten 'em but didn't, congrats to the ones that did deserve 'em and got 'em, and for the others we'll just sit and scratch our heads.
I have 3 nieces coming into town to run around LA in 109 weather. Wish me all luck I don't pass out. And I apologize in advance for my lack of comments in the days to come.

Susan I just tried that link again and it still shows nothing. So is this their way of telling us no more EP's? Is the fact that there is no comment link on the new galleries mean we'll no longer be able to comment? These are two questions I for one would really like to know the answers too. I don't understand why they just won't tell us what their plans are. Why BP?????????

I think it's premature to say EPs are going away, just because BP has done something to the EP area on BP...they know how much the medals mean to folks...heck, they'd be blind to not see the EP forum threads. I bet we'll see more EPs tomorrow...and if we do, then that should answer your question about EPs... I'm keeping my fingers crossed they're still around.

But those EFPs were for June photos. It is entirely possible that they will stop with July images.

Then again it could just be a glitch. Guess will just have to wait and see. I really wish someone from BP would simply let us know what is going on instead of making us wonder and speculate.

Rather than a cheer or tear, I want to express puzzlement. The attached image, Tranquility, was rejected for an EP on June 26 in Travel and Place. I wonder why. To me, the composition, tones, color and subject matter are all at least acceptable. I am not asking whether this should be a finalist or winner. However, does it not deserve an EP so that it can be judged in later rounds? I have seen this happen to many images that are far above mere competence, so this is no aberration.
As an added concern, according to Alexander, Travel and Place had 1,988 images entered in May (6.4% of entries), yet there were a mere 13 Finalists (0.65% of T&P entries.) Of course, all but two of the finalists were also winners!
I offer this image as an example of a concern that is widely held. I am prepared to take some "shots" over this. Some changes need to be made!
