July 2008 EFP Discussion

Happy July to everyone! If you are celebrating a Holiday tomorrow, have fun and BE SAFE. The ER is not a lot of fun and I'm pretty sure they won't let you take pictures there....LOL.

There will be a lot of discussion on the contest changes and how that relates to EFPs. I am as anxious as everyone else to see how that plays out.

Please visit the thread Jim started for additional discussion of the contest changes at:

http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.asp?threadID=32565

Also, don't forget Cheri's thread (EFP Watch for June #4) for posting your EFPs as you receive them (I hope we still are?):

http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.asp?threadID=32550

As always, I look forward to hanging out with ya!

Oh crapola!!!! I totally forgot about a new idea I had!!

The contest countdown was always referred to as "Cocktails and Chocolate" which is just fabulous!! Better than the Oscars anyday.

I was going to give this thread the same type of permanent name:

"CHEERS AND TEARS" - EFP discussion for July 2008...lol

After all, everyone here has a pretty good sense of humor :)

I like to pre judge the EFPs. If I get there before the judge, I am going to "predict" if the photo IMO will be a pick. That way I can participate in "predicting" what the judge will choose. I may be wrong most of the time, but usually I will hit on some. Have a good 4th.

Susan, I love the "cheers and tears" title. Thanks for sharing the other threads so we are better informed. Right now I am strongly in the TEARS corner. No EFP's since June 4! I'm devastated!! I was very lucky though because I decided to buy the "Basic" gallery right before the price went up. Whewww! I'm here for the long haul because I love the people here. I'm sure it will all work out in the long run.

Djoanne, that is such a neat idea. I'll tell you, offering critique is often one of the best ways to expand your vision, which will only improve your own art. I don't find it easy to do, but then, when is growth ever really comfortable? Some folks in a photo group I belong to (and have been absent from lately...boohoo!!) will often look at each members submissions for the month, then pick their favorite from each. This was so much fun and it was always interesting to see who was right on with their picks! Now, to try and predict the judges, well, I say go for it! What better way to expand your vision and your own work by attempting to see through others eyes!!! Good on you!

Elida, there is a different, more accurate way to pronounce Tequila..... To kill ya!!!!!! So stick with your chocolate. At least there are health benefits. That is, until they decide tomorrow that chocolate will kill you too! lol

Karen, I too love the cheers and tears. After all, that is what the discussion is about. I've been where you are and no doubt will be again! Most others I've ever heard from have gone through the same. There are so many variables in the judging process here at BP. There are the images that BP tends to favor and those they don't, there are different judges with different tastes at different times on different days! I think the best barometer to go by is your own!! If you really can't figure out what you are "missing" ask someone. There are so many here more than willing to lend you their "eye" if you need it.

Dang, there are so many questions in the air right now. Will there still be EFP's, Finalists, 2nd place and so on. I hope that perhaps the contest will see fewer entries and that will improve the judging capabilities. But then, if they eliminate Finalists and 2nd Place, well I'd be a goner, since those are my only "realistic" goals at this time :)

Thank you, Susan. I was thinking of a way that viewers could participate in the judging. Who could be offended if we said EFP potential before the judge? I think it would sit better than to rate a photo 10, 8, 7, etc. I would hope others would join me. Just go to "recent entries" and start "judging".

Susan, I wrote to BP to ask if a contest entry couldn't remain on the same page instead of being pushed back. That way you could keep track of which page you were on. The way you need to do it now is start on the last page and work forward to where the judges haven't been. BP needs to put in a search for the page # of contest entries so you wouldn't have to go through them all every time. I think it gives one a good idea what the judges go through to do first picks. I don't intend to go all the way and pick a winner....only first picks. We could call it PEP...predicted editor's pick. You see a lot of great photos this way.

PEP, I love it :) It's a great acronym for peer review too, cause if you get a pick it would sorta pep you up! (no I haven't hit the tookillya yet).

Sharon, I tried the new gallery but it still has the bugs. I won't like it if we can't see the badges cause then we'd have to cancel these threads! So I will just have to be patient like everyone else :)

I started PEPs so I'll attempt to explain. If you read above here is where I first started to talk about peer's pre judging if a photo, in their opinion, might get an EFP. You can go to Contest, Recently submitted, and a certain category that interests you. Then just start looking at the pages and see if you can predict which photos will get EFP. I just type in PEP....peer editor pick. later when the EFPs come out by the "real" judges, you can see if you "judged" correctly. You don't hurt anyone's feelings with a rating, and you don't have to leave a lengthy comment. At least someone knows you like their photo and saw it in the contest. I hope that explains what I would like to see happen here for more peer input.

I think "favorites" could easily serve the peer picks concept, however, what's missing is any BP page to let people know what images are the top fav submissions of the current contest month ... right now, one can see a list of all time favs, but, obviously that favors pics that have been up a long time and most likely contest winners (would expect, not having checked.)

Oh thank goodness Djoanne. I thought it was the next "change" BP was handing down. Actually it's the next thing I expect to change. We'll be voting on each others pictures and it will turn into a complete popularity contest. UGH!!!

This is second guessing the judges...if they do EFPs. The Editors have the final and only say so it won't be a popularity contest. If it were, I wouldn't win that's for certain. LOL

I love my Daisy Refresher photo. If I don't get at least an EFP soon, I will be in shock. I did have a gallery full of EFP and then deleted them all to have a fresh start. And now I'm unable to get one back. One thing I spend too much time here, but what the heck, I'm retired.

Now if I don't get working on my pics I'll have to take up writing catchy jingles or thread titles for a hobby...lol

I think Cary said something a little ways back about Djoanne's PEP idea. The Favorites had/has limitations, like you mentioned. Also, you can't tell who made your pic a fav, like you can when someone chooses you as a Fav Photog. And then there's the "current" entry issue. Tell you what tho, if BP could make that work, it would be really cool. Unless there is a flip side to that, which I'm sure there is, I probably haven't thought of it yet...lol.

Sorry getting back late. Where the heck have I been?? Just sent personal emails out to Karen and Sandy but glad to read on to learn Susan helped Karen with her Egret (sorry don't know my birds very well do I VBG) Karen you did a beautiful job on it too. And if Susan ever wants to help me I'm ready to listen anytime. VBG
Sandy I totally agree with Jessica. Re-submit because that is just a lovely wildlife capture.
So boo-hoo to those who should have gotten 'em but didn't, congrats to the ones that did deserve 'em and got 'em, and for the others we'll just sit and scratch our heads.
I have 3 nieces coming into town to run around LA in 109 weather. Wish me all luck I don't pass out. And I apologize in advance for my lack of comments in the days to come.

Susan I just tried that link again and it still shows nothing. So is this their way of telling us no more EP's? Is the fact that there is no comment link on the new galleries mean we'll no longer be able to comment? These are two questions I for one would really like to know the answers too. I don't understand why they just won't tell us what their plans are. Why BP?????????

I think it's premature to say EPs are going away, just because BP has done something to the EP area on BP...they know how much the medals mean to folks...heck, they'd be blind to not see the EP forum threads. I bet we'll see more EPs tomorrow...and if we do, then that should answer your question about EPs... I'm keeping my fingers crossed they're still around.

But those EFPs were for June photos. It is entirely possible that they will stop with July images.

Then again it could just be a glitch. Guess will just have to wait and see. I really wish someone from BP would simply let us know what is going on instead of making us wonder and speculate.

Rather than a cheer or tear, I want to express puzzlement. The attached image, Tranquility, was rejected for an EP on June 26 in Travel and Place. I wonder why. To me, the composition, tones, color and subject matter are all at least acceptable. I am not asking whether this should be a finalist or winner. However, does it not deserve an EP so that it can be judged in later rounds? I have seen this happen to many images that are far above mere competence, so this is no aberration.
As an added concern, according to Alexander, Travel and Place had 1,988 images entered in May (6.4% of entries), yet there were a mere 13 Finalists (0.65% of T&P entries.) Of course, all but two of the finalists were also winners!
I offer this image as an example of a concern that is widely held. I am prepared to take some "shots" over this. Some changes need to be made!

I think it's beautiful, but ALL of my photos for June were rejected. For July, I am entering EVERYDAY, and if not noticed....I certainly don't need a gallery to hold 300 photos! BP encourages one to take their courses to improve. I've taken 4, feel that I have greatly improved, but now BP should also recognize that...I would think. Thanks for listening. :-)

No chance for an EFP if my entries won't show. Today is the second time I clicked on "enter in contest" from my gallery and it did not show in recent entries. The other day it showed up all white. I'm SO frustrated!

I noticed an all white entry yesterday or day before in the Recent Entries page... I clicked on it and the full size image appeared.

So... perhaps one should not be completely disheartened if the thumbnail shows white? Try clicking to see if the full size image appears. Not great, but at least the image can be judged if this is the case....

Sarah G   Well, Karen is not as fortunate as the other one you found. However, it was from her gallery and not from the recent entry page that I tried it.

Hope you e-mail BP. Keep the wires hot until they fix this.

Christie the chocolate sounds yummy :-)

Thanks Sandy, do you mean "Another Era" and "Reminiscence"? Those both went into the cash contest since I had a few creits to use up. So those won't get an EFP

But "Memories from the Beach" and "Tulips in Vase" were both passed over. Will have to resubmit those.

I just now got one for 7/2 :-) So I can stop crying and come out of the corner now. Hope I can still have that chocolate though.

Happy EFPs everyone!

  John,

I went to reply a while back, but BP was bogging down...

Anyway, since you asked & no one's responded, my guess as to why Tranquility might have been passed over for an EFP:

- Critical focus seems to be on the framing leaves, not the beach area
- Lacks a strong central element of interest

Of course, if you resubmit, it may yet be selected! It is a very nice capture. :)

Well, since I'm only to the whiney stage, I'll share my Ghiradelli with you Susan - even though you got an EFP! LOL!

You know, as the Brilliant Ken told me, if I look back on my photos a year from now, I will be surprised at how much I have learned. I just looked back on my photos from a year and a half ago, and he's right. The growth is definitely there. I just hope when I'm looking back in a year from now I won't still be waiting on one EFP! Cause if I am - then I could way 1,000 pounds from the amount of chocolate I'm consuming lately! LOLOL!!!!

John, 2 add'l notes...
- as per focusing on the leaves... I've been fighting my camera over that too. The solution is to get the camera to focus where you want it (usually by pointing lower), then shut-off AF, re-frame & shoot.
- as to what do you do about a large expanse of uninteresting water? One way to add interest is to throw a rock in the water... for example, see the image I am (hopefully) attaching to this response...

Thank for taking the time to comment on Tranquility, David. First, the image was captured on film and infinity was in focus as well as the leaves because of the wide angle lens.. It was scanned at 4,000 ppi and I've added a cropped portion to demonstrate the detail you referred to. Second, I was after an overall feel of peacefulness and was not concerned with a specific point of interest in the image. I guess this is really a matter of taste.
My point, however, in uploading this image is that despite what some may view as flaws, I believe it is good enough to warrant an EP. Yet, I have seen many images of this calibre passed over.
I would hope that anyone who believes this is an unworthy image would at least consider the statistics I provided in my initial comment. Those numbers should be newsworthy at BP!

  Hi Steve,

You asked for opinions... that's all I can give.

Anyway, while you may indeed be correct on the actual point of focus, I can only comment on what appears to me when I look at the posted image. Even in the enlarged image, the framing leaves *appear* a bit sharper to me.

Also, while the image may have met *your* goals, that's certianly not the question here! It, for some reason, perhaps other than what I am guessing, perhaps not, but *some* reason, the editor did not feel it qualified. I offered my best guesses as to why.

As per *good enough for an EP*... what constitutes that? EPs are supposed to mean "picked for next round of judging" (my words) which I read as meaning "have the potential to be a winner."

Should an image that an editor feels doesn't have the potential to win be picked for an EP? Personally, I think not.

Do images that obviously don't have such potential get EPs anyway? It certainly seems so to me!

Does that mean that other images that editors think don't have such potential should get picked anyway? IMHO, no.

Many of my own EPs probably should not have been awarded! Some I felt were deserving did not get EPs. That's just the way it goes. You and I can always resubmit next month.

As per the stats... I really don't see how they have or should have any bearing on EP awards.

David, I really do appreciate the time you've spent in your comments. However, I think you are begging the question I raised. I am asking whether there is indeed a reasonable standard for judging EPs. You are assuming that there was some care given in the judgment to not award it an EP. If there was care given, then there should be obvious and significant faults in the image. I don't believe there are; if you do, then there is no point to our discussion. I should point out that I did not ask for opinions about why the judges were "right" and why. I obviously think they were wrong on this and many other images I see passed by. Why? That is my question.
As for the stats on finalists and winners, if we assume that the same judges are selecting EPs and finalists, then the numbers they accept are indeed relevant to whether they have reasonable standards. My guess is that the judges have nothing to do with the selection of EPs, which would also be a relevant and interesting consideration in deciding whether EPs are fairly selected.
Even Jim in his recent note has acknowledged that many quality images were being missed. I believe the Travel & Place category is a particularly glaring example.
So, I am not asking whether individuals like or dislike my image. I am asking whether others share my concern about the quality and standards of the current judging system.
Steve

Steve, with 1000+ photos a day to the contest, my guess is the EP folks really whip thru them fast...and many get missed. That's just the reality. I'd like to think all of mine should get an EP, but they don't. I can always resubit. It's hard to fault BP because of the shear volume of photos they must go thru...

  Steve,

You said: "I want to express puzzlement. The attached image... was rejected for an EP... I wonder why."

Since we all know that no BP editors are going to respond, that leaves only us contributors. So, I responded.

If you don't want a response, don't ask the question.

Simple matter: I have formed opinions as to what is more likely to get picked over what is not based on my observations. They may be wrong, but, they are all I have to go on. You are welcome to disagree.

My stated opinions above are based on those observations. Personally, I really like your shot. I was simply trying to 'play devil's advocate', if you will, and try to determine what reasons might exist for that image being passed over by an EDITOR.

Note, I also did not say JUDGE... although I believe there is a high probability that at least some editors and judges are one and the same.

And I was DIRECTLY answering the question you raised. Is there a standard for judging (e.g. making picks for EPs)... I believe there is and I believe that BP is doing a pretty decent, albit not perfect, job of it.

Extending I said... do deserving images get passed-over... certainly they do!

Is your image a deserving image... that's not for me to decide!

What makes a 'deserving image' ... that's also up to BP to determine.

However, I do think it is a useful exersize to try to determine reasons why an image might have been passed over by an editor and then look for ways to improve those factors, either for a resubmit or for future submissions. That's just smart, IMHO.

What should you do if you think your image is deserving but passed over? RESUBMIT!

How off point is that?

And, the stats are meaningless. The editors/judges/whatever have no way to know for sure how many entries will be submitted. BP states, in the FAQ, in no uncertain terms, that EPs are NOT awarded on any kind of quota basis. So the stats are irrelevant.

As per the quality standards, quite frankly (and I think I said this pretty clearly already)... IMHO, many images that do not deserve EPs sometimes get them anyway. And, some images that deserve EPs, don't. Including, both ways, some of mine. Same for everyone else in the contest.

I'd say that's pretty darn fair!!

That's the game. If you don't like the rules, don't play. But, I see nothing unfair about it.

David, You state that many images that are undeserving are awarded EPs and many that should get them are missed. I have seen many others agree with you in these discussion threads. You then say that because that happens to everyone "that's pretty darn fair!!"

That's like saying that a justice system that allows many guilty of a capital crime go free while executing many innocent individuals is fair because we all face the same peril. That is a strange sense of fairness!

On the question of standards, you state that "BP is doing a pretty decent, albit not perfect, job of it." Most photographers know what the basic requirements of a good image are, but those standards are being ignored far to often in the awarding of EPs in my opinion. I know many who share that view.

Ken, you and I have discussed the problem of numbers before and I agree that BP faces a big challenge every month. As you know, my preference is to eliminate EPs. As I said before, you really don't want to see how politics, sausage and photo contests are made. They are all inevitably an ugly business to consider carefully. However, as long as the EPs persist, I think they must be done better and more carefully than they are. I honestly hope that BP gets things sorted out during these current changes. It has been important to me and I want it to continue to be.

Steve

"That's like saying that a justice system that allows many guilty of a capital crime go free while executing many innocent individuals is fair because we all face the same peril. That is a strange sense of fairness!"

I do hope you're kidding.

If you expect any such judging process such as that employed here to be entirely consistent, you are living a dream.

And, that's besides the fact that photography is as much an art as it is a science. Quantitative evaluation has the possiblity of being mechinized. Qualitative judgement, however, does not.

"but those standards are being ignored far to often in the awarding of EPs"

In most cases I've seen, the standards applied here to EFPs are far more lenient than those applied to pros or the "serious" competitions, such as Nikon, etc. Do you really think a simple snapshot like you are comparing would have any chance what so ever in the Nikon competition? I don't think so.

And, why should BP apply the same standards as, say, Nikon? They are not the same competition, nor do they have the same goals. Why should they?

Oh, wait... Maybe you should enter the shot into the PhotoBird contest... oh, but no, it's not a sunset... seems only sunsets win there, regardless of category or quality or.... guess you'd better shoot a sunset, then :D :D

The problem is you expect more than is reasonable from a free contest. They get between 40,000+ (Oct last year) to 30,000 (last mon) images submitted. And it's FREE.

This month is the first month you actually have to buy something to enter. But, not much... $50 gets you 364 (or so) entries. How much is that per entry? Do you get that in any other competition? I think not!!!!

Oh, and how consistent are the "editors" who weed out images in other competitions? I don't know. Nor do you, because... guess what? They don't show anyone anything but the WINNERS and maybe some runners-up/finalists. So what makes you think this is a problem isolated to BP?

Anyway, like I said previously, IF YOU DON'T WANT AN OPINION, DON'T ASK FOR ONE. But DON'T tell me I'm wrong for giving you what you asked for just because it's not what you hoped for.

David, Apparently you can not read carefully, or you refuse to. Without exception, you have distorted every point I made. That is often referred to as a Straw Man Fallacy: distort a persons point by making it extreme and then attack that unrealistic version. It is a sophomoric ploy. And now you have added a pejorative label, "snapshot," to describe my image that you claimed to like earlier. That is rather naughty of you.
I was hoping for opinions on the judging standards. Whether you or Nikon likes my image is irrelevant to that question.

Sorry for trying to help. I tried to be diplomatic. I'll know better in the future.

Simple fact though, since you want it this way... your image didn't reach a quality that deserved an EFP. It was a nice snapshot, that is all. Sorry, that you wish it was more, but that's the plain and simple truth. The "editors", in this case, were spot on.

I explained why in my first reply.

I'm sorry that's it's so hard for you to accept the truth. Deal with it.

End of discussion.

Whether I am paying to enter this contest, a Nikon, Cannon or free contest there has to be a set of guidlines for selection and it needs to be followed consisitently for this contest to work. It does not have to be to the same standards as say Nikon, or a pro competition, but there should be standards and they should be followed. I have uploaded a shot below, tell me should this have gotten an EP?

As to if a photo is EFP worthy, no one knows because no one but BP knows how a photo is "judged" in order to get an EFP.

I believe that honestly there is minimal judging going on at that stage. There are simply too many photos to wade through. I think editors just pull photos that catch their eye. And lots and lots of photos are overlooked due to the simple reason of there being so many.

It would be humanly impossible to view every single 30,000 plus photo every month.

So when mine don't get EFP I simply assume it wasn't looked at. Not that I think I am that great, but it helps to keep me from getting down or discouraged. I grumble a bit and then just resubmit :-)

Ok, if not for David's critique - I might not have seen the forest for the trees. David, thanks! I have adjusted, saturated, sharpened, unmasked, highlighted and tweaked every other gadget I came across. I think the photo is the better for it, especially since I thought it was good to begin with and couldn't see its flaws. Maybe when we resubmit, we are actually correcting the things that prevented it from getting an EFP to begin with. Now here's hoping Good Morning Sunshine actually gets one this month. Just my thought's after pulling my head out of the bag of chocolate.

Sarah G   Steve,

Any chance that the cropped image isn't as good a quality because it was originally scanned in and in the cropping you lost too many pixels?

It almost looks like that, but I don't really know that much about it all so don't take me too seriously on it.

I like the crop. It makes the photo less dark.

Sarah G   AND here's my 2 cents on the contest issue...

Well, Steve so much for being prepared "...to take some "shots" over this."

In the end the truth came out. All you wanted to do was complain about the judging...

"So, I am not asking whether individuals like or dislike my image. I am asking whether others share my concern about the quality and standards of the current judging system."

Concerns about the quality and the standard of judging have been discussed over and over again. That is a DEAD issue. It is NOT going to change. Give it up. I wish it would go away. THIS KIND OF STUFF MAKES ME GLAD I CAN NO LONGER GET AN EFP. I AM FREE!!!!

You have quite a few EFPs and some GREAT ones too in your gallery. You should just be VERY happy with what you have.

Perhaps it is time to start looking at an image and saying, "Can I handle NOT getting an EFP on this one?" If the answer is yes, then enter it. If the answer is no, then don't.

It is AWFULLY HARD to have an image that brings back fond memories or one that you have slaved over passed on by. It is the ways of this land and you have to be prepared to deal with the consequences of dwelling here.

"As to if a photo is EFP worthy, no one knows because no one but BP knows how a photo is "judged" in order to get an EFP"

My point and Steve's point. I posted that photo because it did recieve an EFP. This was just a snapshot of a piece of equipment where I work. The only thing I did was play with the curves to get this look. The photo was for a BP club. That photo should not have gotten anything. There is nothing spectacular about it. But it obviously caught someones attention.

Unfortunetly Sarah, this issue will never go away, until the judges or whomever decides on what image gets an EFP uses some sort of criteria for the selection process and sticks with it.

My 3 pennies worth..

Sarah G   The issue is that it won't go away unless they give an EFP to every image that isn't blurry (for a reason).

I like your image David P. It is rather uniquely edited and that you are stretching yourself is absolutely GREAT.

Unfortunately for you I'm not a BP judge. Fortunately for me, I don't want to be one.

In the end this place is as it is and you just have to reside here or not reside here. Those are the choices.

I would not want to be one either. When I first started on BP I uploaded 1 a day, now I am lucky if I upload 5 a month. I have limited myself and improved the quality of the images I submit by doing this. I know it is my choice to stay or go, I will be staying, because I really enjoy this site and the friends and help I have received here. I nkow they cannot give an EFP to every image, nor do I think they should, however there should be quidelines for being awarded an EFP, not that it hust caught someones eye..

Anyway, enough of that. Have a great weekend Sarah!

Well I for one am done re-submitting. I did it for the first time and I listened to my fellow photographers and re-worked it to brighten the eyes. But my Irish Smile II has missed the mark twice. Which broke my heart TWICE!! So instead of re-working a capture and re-submitting I'm just going to get out there and shoot more.

I usually do not voice my opinion but.....
WOW! I feel like I have just witnessed a dog fight over something that is NOT worth shedding blood!
Why are people letting the judging of the images ruin there day, month or even there year??
I, myself have a few images that I wish would have been picked for EFP, but were not. You don't hear me whining or having an anxiety attack over it!
Come on! Let's worry about something else... Like the lives our men and women over in Iraq, Child abuse, gas prices!! I think THAT is something to lose sleep over!
If the judging is so bad here at BP than why not ckeck out another photography site? Seriously People!!
Let's get a life and find something better to do with our time (like volunteer in a soup kitchen) than sit here and complain!
Not getting a EFP, Finialist or Winner is not the End of The World!
Mabey if you enter your images in the frame of mind that it is for the enjoyment of sharing your talents and hard work. Wether for personal or business reasons. Mabey you would not be so DISTRAUGHT!

Elizabeth this issue has come up before. And I'll say what I said then, I come here to get away from all that life stuff. BP and photography is my refuge from my current not so great life.

So my (fake) crying and moaning about not getting an EFP is all in good fun. At least for me. Trust me when I say I have other things I can really cry about.

I am certain everyone else feels the same. I think you are taking our rantings a little too seriously.

My comments were not directed at you. I know that your comments were in jest. Believe it or not, there are people actually getting depressed, threatening to quit BP and photography altogether because of the judging.
Wether or not an EFP plaque is placed under each and every image in ones gallery is not something to give up a hobbie, business or dream over!
It is getting to the point that it is taking the fun out of this for me!
This too is my escape and my passion!

Well stated Elizabeth! It's not even like as if there were any serious prizes to win or actual industry recognition!

This site & contest can be very addictive. But, when it stops being fun, then one needs seriously reconsider why they are participating!

When downsizing your photos to 720p in TIFF for upload to BP, I currently use the unsharp mask tool in PSE6. If I switched to regular PS, would that give me the ability to use the bicubic tools I have been hearing about?

No EP on this one, entered in D&M 7/1.

Oh, well... Like this bee, I'll just move on to the next flower and go on.
(But I may just have to revisit that blossom again, and resubmit this next month!)
I like this image. With it, I have fond memories of hanging out with the wasps and bees for over an hour, as my family watched from indoors, thinking I had yoyally lost my mind. I like the fact that, at age 43, I became a little less afraid of bees on that day, and learned a lot about their behavior.
Passed over by the judges... No big deal.
Smiles, Lisa♥
ps- Elizabeth, you're right-on!

Lisa, It is obvious the judges stayed up drinking the night before and couldn't see clearly.
We all agree it is a winner! And as long as you and your friends know that it is a winner, That is what is important!
Please try again!
Mabey this time they will be sober!! L.O.L.

  LOL, Elizabeth!
Actually, the reason I posted the above was not to complain, but to show that even nice pics get passed over sometimes. (probably due to the sheer volume of images that the judges need to review)
I wanted to build on what you said earlier:

"Life is way to stressful as is without undue pressure and worry added!
This is my outlet! I won't let ANY CONTEST Ruin my love of photography!
So lighten up everyone!
Just have fun with it!!!!!"

Badge or no badge, in the big scheme of things, it's not really that importrant.
(But I must admit, it sure feels nice each time a new one appears!)
Blessings, Lisa♥

OMG Elizabeth WoW lighten up!! If I wanted to discuss the plight of the world I really don't think this would be the correct forum to do that in. I didn't say I'm depressed and I'm ready to take my toys and go home. Actually I stated it would cause me to get out there and shoot more!! Yes it does break my heart that my sweet puppy dog got over looked a second time because I have an emotional attachment to him. He's the reason I found my love of photography in the first place. I was just sharing my feelings on RE-SUBMITTING more then anything else with people who suggested I do so in the first place. So sweetheart there's no need to get your britches all in a bunch!!!

That is a lovely capture & image Lisa! Nice job :) Please do resubmit this!

Ann, I can't speak for Elizabeth, but I don't think she was really focusing on your comment in particular!

Has anyone noticed that in the new galleries if you click on the title rather that the photo, the first photo comes up every time!

Thanks Elida. That's the fun of it....to get there before the judges, but it's a tiresome task. I'm happy you received an EFP.*S*T*A*R*

  Lisa,
I know you weren't complaining. I just wanted you to know that I think that image is awesome and was over looked and poking fun at BP mean while.

Ann,
David was right. I am not focusing on your's or anyones else's comments here. I am talking about the fact that some are getting very depressed over these contest results to the point that they are determining wether or not they have any talent because they are not getting EFP's, Finialist or winners.
That is so sad!
Take my gallery for example:
Some people will not even take the time to really look closely at some of my images, because of the fact that I do alot of macro involving Spiders, wasp, and other insects that alot of people are deathly afraid of! So I know that some of my images will get passed over if one of the judges hates insects! It's just something I have to expect, live with and except! Even my Daughter hates spiders and will not look those type of images and she is 20 years old. But it doesn't bother me.

What is wrong with wanting people to love and enjoy there work and not depend on what a handful of judges think to determin there worth as photographers???

(THIS WAS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON ANYONE!)

Before I forget:
"The plight of the world" was just an example of things to worry about instead of BP. Not trying to start another discussion topic.

ps, (Sweetheart) just so you don't worry,
My britches fit just fine,
No bunching here ........ l.o.l.

Alright, my turn..Would anyone be willing to go to my gallery and look at Delaying Harvest and Chicken and Eggs and let me know why the editors may have passed these up? I'm a big girl and can handle the critique (I have chocolate ya know), just want to know if I should re-submit these later, rework them or forget about it.

Stephanie I would maybe just add a bit more contrast. The compositions look good.

For the still lifes try some with more natural/softer lighting and leave in some shadows. Check out Marie Fields and Deb Harder's gallery here to see what I mean. They are both fantastic still life photographers.

Thanks Susan! I think I still have the original copy, so I'll try leaving some of the shadows in it. When I get the baby to bed I'll check out the photographers you mentioned as well.

I just searched Harder -- I find if the name is not exact, it won't come up but a correct first or last name will. Her name is Debra Harder. Here's a link to her gallery:
