Tokina, Tamron or Sigma wide angle lens? I will be going to the Grand Canyon in September, and would love to have a wide angle lens to shoot the vast expanse of the Canyon. I have a Canon Rebel XT w/ an EFS 17-85mm and EF 75-300mm. The Tokina lenses I was looking at, was either the 12-24mm f/4 AF-X or 11-16 mm f/2.8 AT-X. However, after reading some of the other Q & A's about wide angle lenses, it seems that others like the Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 11-18mm. I know Canon makes a 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, but cost is a factor in my decision. If you could help me with this I would appreciate it, thanks.

Hi Cynthia, I have had the Tokina for about 2 years now. It is a great lens. Optically, it will produce images not discernably different from Canon or Nikon lenses. It is built like a tank, feels solid and zooms and focuses smoothly. It does not have the sonic wave type focusing found on the newest type lenses so autofocus is a little slower but it is accurate and this focal range does not really demand ultra high speed focusing. Another consideration is that it is a constant aperture lens so you do not have to worry about any exposure shift whn zooming out. And finally, it is only about 1/2 the cost of the big boys" lenses. I was the Grand Canyon in May. Shot there, as well as Monumnet Valley, Bryce Canyo and Zion National Park with my Canon 30D and a Canon 17-85 mm IS zoom. At first I thought I needed more telephoto. I never considered needing more than 17 [eq. 28] at the wide angle lens. I was right. Check my basic gallery, there are several shots that will prove my point. Remember, at the GC your looking at a grand and natural site [and sight.] But, it's 216 miles long and about 10 miles wide. At the South Rim, the depths approach a mile or more. You're just too far away to worry about whether you'll get more with a "wider lens." But, for your other photography, go for something with a fixed aperture that's fast [f/2.8 or faster.] It always helps to be able to try for selective focus, something that's nearly impossible with a zoom lens that has its variable starting aperture at f/3.6.

Thank you Bill and John for your help with my decision on what lens to get, your responses were great. Although, John as you've said, you don't think I really need to buy a wide angle lens, I would rather have one with me, than not and wish I did. So the Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 AT-X is my choice!
