More statistics re June 2008 totals

Hello!

Thanks for the first replies to my monthly contest entry totals!

I could not resist and do a bit more counting. These totals I took a few hours later, as "chores" waited in the garden. "Stuff" (bushes & trees) are growing like mad and the chipper is hungry to be stuffed with branches, and the compost boxes are waiting to be fed!

So, here goes - if you also added the totals and I have a difference to your sum, never mind, take yours as correct! LOL!:

1) Free Sites: I make it 11,104. Quite a sum. And I am certain that most of them are sites set up by one-time or very occasional visitors.

Only 194 (!!) show that they have updated their galleries in the past week.

It seems that BP only shows activities of the last week for the "free" and the "Basic" galleries. The other one seem to have monthly indicators: i.e. that activities have happened in the past week or month.

194 of 11,104 is only 1.7%!

That means, to me at least, that there is only a minute contribution to the contest from the "Freebies".

2) Basic Galleries:

I count 4091 with 1522 updating during the past week.

This means that 37.2% are active in that period.

How many submission to the contest from this group? Well, maybe there is another "nut" that counts these - must be someone with a very fast Internet connection, mine is tooooo slow - and my brain has no more room for such stuff!

3) De Luxe sites:

Here I count 945 sites and 461 have updated their sites in the past MONTH. This means 48.8% are active.

There must be a lot of contest entries spilling out of those dungeons!

4) Pro Sites:

My total comes to 1336 sites with activities in the past month on 732 sites, i.e. 54.8%.

Maybe someone has snooped and checked how many of those PROs do regular contributions to the contest.

Looking at these totals, my hunch is that the Freebies are not the major source of contest entries.

So, I wonder if the totals will be reduced next month! Will the submissions again drop?

Enough statistics... lets get back out into the garden...

Thanks for reading and hope for th Grand Price!

Alexander, thank you so much for this information! I made a sorry stab at computing this myself... didn't get too far. LOL! Yes, it will be veeery interesting, from here on out! I always did suspect, the freebies weren't the main source of entries; that the Basics (formerly the Premiums), were. When I browse through the names of those who have Deluxe (or Pro), I find familiar names (ie., from the contest entry page) are few and far between. Don't know if that's accurate -- just my take. I do know, depending on the time of day you check that entry page, you will find either lots of friends you know, or lots of people you have never heard of. That of course, is geographical (I am one of the few I think, usually up at 2 a.m. Central Time to post with people in Australia and the UK, as those with any sense, are sleeping at that hour of the night!) By the way, I'm among the Every-dayers and I know there are a lot of us; when I joined, that was the deal I arranged - with myself! I said, a photo a day and with very few exceptions I have kept that pace. Some enter every couple days - maybe once a week - maybe less. It is interesting to calculate! I will check your thread in coming days to see what, if anything is new on all of this.

"That means, to me at least, that there is only a minute contribution to the contest from the "Freebies"."

Hi Alexander, this is what I suspected so I'm a bit bummed that I'm now excluded from the contest becasue I'm a "freeloader".

Yes, I could pay for a gallery but I don't have a phone at home - the company can't connect me for all sorts of reasons (the main one is their incompetence) so I can only get involved in this site on my office computer - before working hours, after working hours or at lunch, or at a friends house. I can't upload images on my office computer. I don't see the point of paying for a gallery until I can get an internet connection set up at home, and believe me I've been tryin for months to do that!

I entered the contest for fun, I've no hope of winning but the occassional EFP was nice. I'm never going to get a gallery prize. It's a pity its come to this.

I hope they change the name of the Free Contest to the Free-To-Enter-Paid-Members-Only-Contest, though that doesn't have a nice ring to it!

Thanks for all your statistics, theyv made for interesting reading!

Donna, there are no references to the "free" contest anymore. It's just the "contest."

Great idea to check the activity level of the different categories, Alexander. I must say I am surprised that there are so few relatively active free galleries. There is a thread started by Djoanne asking people how many entries they had in June--this would of course be a very informal poll but might be of interest. Here's the link:

"Only 194 show that they have updated their galleries in the past week !!!"

This is a very surprising total. I would think that probably even less then that will actually sign up for a basic gallery. The few people that are active would seem to be a non-factor in the old or new contest at any rate. Unless it is about money I don't see a reason to lock out the people from the free galleries.

I don't often update my basic gallery and my Deluxe hasen't changed in a while. It expires next month and I don't have any plans to renew. It's a shame the few people such as Donna will not be able to enter the contest .

I hope some arrangement will be set for the few that are actually active.

THANKS for all your work. They are interesting stats. It is obvious that the "freebies" are NOT the reason for all the changes.

Thanks for the support Mickey! I can't believe it's a new month and I don't have to think about what pics I might enter! I'll continue to comment on everyone else's but will be a tiny bit green with envy!

Oh well, fingers and toes crossed that one of Junes might win me a gallery! Ha! Fat chance!

Good luck to everyone else!

  Hello Friends!

Thanks for alll your comments. Yes, the "Free" photographers do not seem to submit a lot. But then, who knows? We would have to check all 11,000+ listings every week, check the contest submissions, compare names, and then we would know. Not a job I would like to do! (BP, naturally, has it easy, as I am sure there statistics should, nay must, given them those totals).

Interesting developments...

I don't see much of a decrease yet in entries. It is only July 5th and there are already 3330 photos.

If that continues then there will probably be about 20,000 at the end of the month. A bit of a decrease but not as much as I would have thought.

Of course this is all subjective since we don't know yet what the final number will be.

Susan, I would also suspect that some of the folks in the USA are travelling or just taking a break, over the 4th of July holiday. That might be why the numbers are down a tad...
