Monthly Contest Totals for June 2008

Contest Total for June 2008

Free Contest Totals for June 2008

Calling all Contesters!

Here are the totals of the entries in the Free Contest for June 2008. Taken at 09:00 a.m. C.E.T. ( Midnight in Redmond, WA):

Nature and Landscape 4286 14.5%
Animals 4324 14.7%
People 5172 17.5%
Elements of Design 1420 4.8%
Digital Darkroom 1751 5.9%
Travel and Place 2115 7.2%
Flowers 4054 13.7%
Macro 2462 8.3%
Catch-All 2932 9.9%
Monthly Theme 983 3.3%
Total 29499
Monthly theme: "Brotherhood"

Cash Contest: All mention of the Cash Contest was already eliminated at 23:35 PDST (Redmond Time) from the main menu. I therefore could not check the totals, but a few hours before the number of entries was around 950. Our friends in Redmond were pretty quick to erase all traces of the cash contest – even before the deadline of July 1. Heck, you cannot even see what people have entered!

"The End" of the Cash Contest, therefore there are many more entries as Jim twice sent messages to use up ones credits. So the chances for wining some prices are cut in half! Mind you, Jim says that the contest is "suspended"...... but the speed of killing that section speaks another voice. Let’s all wave a “Good-Bye”… :-(

Again the totals don't quite add up by 30 - well, I guess this is due to the fact that I cannot look at all sections at 20 seconds before cut-off.

Comparison:
October 2007: 40033
November 2007: 35935
December 2007: 33187
January 2008: 36412
February 2008: 31563
March 2008: 33458
April 2008: 31568
May 2008: 31160
June 2008: 29506

The drop of monthly entries continues unabated. Please do not compare the drop with the number of entries in October 2007, which was the first month I knowingly wrote down the figures. I do remember that October was an exceptional, unexplained, month, with totals many thousands higher than ever before.

The drop in entries for the monthly theme is especially heavy! I guess that the theme “Brotherhood” was not a popular or easy one.

We all can puzzle, guess, look into the coffee suds and ponder the reasons for the drop of entries. My own, unconfirmed and private, hunch is that the now many months long lasting discussions on the number of EFPs and Finalists awarded, with no statement of direction (other than the end of the Cash Contest) forthcoming from Jim is the reason. I guess many gave up, or, as it is shown in the recent user survey received “I’m outa there”.

My hope: A clear and precise statement from BP.

Jim, we all love BP!

Alexander

I can't find if they have picked winners..the old winner page is gone, so I don't know how we will know who won.

Michael Skelton .
Thank you Alaxander for your complete dedication again this month. The totals are dropping like the stock market. Now that the summer is here one would think it would be the other way around. I'm sure your hunch maybe be part of the reason along with a lot of others. It wouldn't surprise me that the price of gas and the economy in general plays a small part.

Carolyn I check the link above and it opens a page but there are no photos there. I can't figure out why.

Anyway's what ever the reasons for the down turn and the changes , BEST OF LIGHT !!!

Wonderful as always Alexander! Thanks so much for the totals.

The cash contest winners are buried at the bottom of the winners page. A shame they are so hard to find.

Now that the free contest is limited to paid subscribers it will be interesting to see the totals next month.

I wonder how many people with free galleries will upgrade so they can still enter.

Doesn't much matter, since they've eliminated half the prizes anyway, so nobody is going to get a win very often if ever.

" I wonder how many people with free galleries will upgrade so they can still enter "

I'm sure for some people the 2nd place prize of a free gallery was the reason for entering the contest. There may be some members that just can't afford the "Basic" gallery. 22 dollars may not seem like much to most members but for others it could mean the world.

So in a way I do feel bad for them. The way it is set up now if you ever had a Deluxe gallery , taken a photo course and/or had a Premium gallery you can now just have a free gallery and still enter the contest.

I can see that things will change again if that happens.

I wish there could be another way to handle the situation without closing the door for free members.

Thank you, Alexander, for the statistics and Susan for finding the previous Cash Winners. They are hard to find unless you know where to look for them, but at least they are still there.

Here's another statistic for you.
As of this morning, there were 10,439 Free galleries compared to only 4,043 Basic galleries. I'd say BP's decision stands to have quite an impact on the overall situation (contest entries to judge and income to the site).

  Hello Nikki!

Great minds think alike! I did not see that you also have counted the sites. It looks like we do have somewhat different totals - well, as I was sure to have made errors in counting (waning brain cells, all with reduced input capacity) I am not surprised at it. (And I am definitively toooo lazy to recount!).

My toughts are that the "Freebies" as I called them, have only little impact on the submission totals - but I may be wrong.

Lets watch it next month and see how many new "Basics" are coming in...

A bientot!

  Were our totals way off?

I counted about 7 a.m. BP time. Counted again about 1 p.m. BP time and found the Free Gallery count changed by -22 (lost 25; added 3 that I could "see") and the Basic Gallery count changed by +10 (no losses that I could see) but as you say it gets confusing. I did create a table and input the numbers for each letter of the alphabet this morning which is how I was able to do a comparison.

As I see it, the Free Gallery privileges are unchanged except for contest entry. It looks as if about half those who "dropped" their Free Galleries did so because entering the contest was their only or primary reason for belonging to BP and about half upgraded to the Basic Gallery. I know this is over-simplified and some may have left "in protest" while others may have purchased the Basic Gallery because they just joined today and it looked like a good deal or because they were going to do so, anyway. Still . . . it will, indeed, be interesting to check the count in a month's time.
