Lens upgrade

I have purchased a Canon EOS 40D SLR camera with an 85mm-135m is zoom lens. I am new at this, and would like to know what lens I could purchase, that would get me more detailed closeups.

If by detailed close-up you mean getting very close to your subject, then you want a good macro lens, like the EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro USM or EF 100 f/2.8 Macro USM. If instead you mean lens that will bring distant subjects closer, you want a telephoto lens like the EF 300 f/4L IS USM or tele-zoom like the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM. There are many good choices, a budget and description of intended use would help narrow the choices.

Jason, this is more of a question than an answer. I am thinking of buying the Canon XSi (450D), but have been reading a lot lately about the EOS 40D. Do you like your camera? I'm trying to justify spending the extra $600 (by the time you get the lens).

In response to Jason P. I purchased a Sigma 100mm Macro early on and love the detail I get. Most of the close-ups I shot in my gallery were with this lens. There are other options such as close-up filters or extension tubes that are a lot less cost wise. I tried, but always went back to my Sigma 100mm....

In repsonse to Jeff H: I love my 40D. I had a Rebel XT and quickly upgraded to a 30D and then a 40D. In my opinion they were great upgrades. Did I need them? No? Could the XT or probably the XSi do the same? Yes. I still have my XT and I use both. I obviously reach for the 40D first. The autofocus is much better. The biggest thing for me, which seems silly, is the menu system. It is so much easier to make setting changes. The ISO showing in the viewfinder on the 40D is the best feature for me. I also like the build of the 40D better once a grip is added, but this is user preference. If you are hesitant about spending the money hopefully you can 'hold' both in your hands and make the decision from there.

Thank you for the reply, Suzanne! I was just playing around online and noticed that B&H and Adorama currently have 2 GREAT deals on the 40D w/ the 28-135mm IS lens, which I was thinking of getting instead of the 18-55mm IS if I got the XSi -- and these 2 deals would be LESS than if I got the XSi, so I may be upgrading before even purchasing..lol.. Thanks again!
