Sharpness in canon xsi

I just got my first DSLR. Canon xsi.I thought when I shoot with SLR what I see in the viewfinder is what I get in the final image. But I have some issues.[Possible is just me becouse I am new to this camera.;)] But one of my problem is sharpnes of the image.(My lens is IS 18-55mm-came with kit).Even when I shoot in Auto mode pic. is not clear, and sharp to me. And I take a lot of photos so it would be really pain to sharp all of them in Photoshop. Often I just need sharp image straight from the camera.(I tried changing sharpnes in the settings, but I can't change it in Auto mode..becouse it is set up already for me...)
My other problem is..I dot't really get what I see in the viewfinder. It looks like I have some extra elements on the pic. even I didn't see them in viewfinder.
Also, when I take few shots, one after onother, the camera sort of freezes. It didn;t happen at the first week I had to. (Now it is 3rd week I am using week). Is it possible it is a defect of camera?
Thank you all for respond....

I have the XTI, and use the kit lens all the time. You may want to try Manul (m). Sounds like your shutter speed is to slow. I try to keep mine 1/60 or above. If your not sure on what the settings mean, get the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson (from BP)

There are a few reasons why the pictures you took do not look sharp. Since you did not post a sample picture or describe the situation, one can only guess what the cause is and how to fix it.

For example, it could be due to hand shake even though you have an IS lens and the shutter speed is not fast enough. Or the subject moved. Or the camera focus on something rather than your intended subject. Or not enough depth-of-field (with the lens' aperture wide open). Make sure it's not one or more of these problems.

Your camera also has a Picture Style that you can set the sharpness, contrast, etc. Read from page 82 of your instruction manual. That should help if you want direct print from camera without doing post processing. You can still set these Picture Style parameter (through menu) even though the shooting mode in automatic (exposure).

Also your camera's viewfinder covers only 95% of the entire view. That's why you get more than you see from the viewfinder. But the image shown on the LCD should be 100%.

Don't know why your camera 'freeze' exactly. Maybe you have the 2 second self timer engaged. Or maybe you are taking pictures at night and the camera has the auto noise reduction on (because exposure time is long or a high ISO is used). See if the camera works normally in day time.

Hope I have answered some of your questions.

Thank you Andy for your respond. :) well.. very often I notice that I can't keep my camera stedy. So you may be right it could be a reason. But even when I toook pic. during the day, the person was n't moving, everything was blured..there was not even one sharp element on entire pic. :/ When I was shooting with point and shoot cameras, that have image stabilazer,I didn't really have this problem. Even during the night, when the light was low, pic. still came up nice, and clear...

I did read my manual, before I post my question. ;) I tried those settings. When I shoot stedy subject most of the time it is nice and clear. I think I just need to try it in different circumstances...

Usually I shoot through the viewfinder. The live view shooting mode doesn't work in all shooting modes. I guess I need to keep it in my mind than.. :)

The freezing problem appeared while I was shooting pic. during the day. I tried take one pic, after onother, and than camera refused to take onother shoot, becouse it was still writing the last pic. I took. When I was shooting with my canon power shot pro 1,this problem started to appear after maybe 2 years I was using camera. But had the same problem. Don't have solution for it...
Is is possible it is camera defect? ://

Anyway... Thank you very much for your help and time Andy. :))

Hi Patrycja, it is strange that you said in the first paragraph that even though the person is not moving (steady subject), you still did not get a clear picture. But then in the second paragraph you get clear picture of steady subject. Logically you should get clear pictures in both situations. Now try to make sure the autofocus switch on the lens is at AF position, not M. While looking throught the viewfinder, half press the shutter to focus on your subject. Make sure at least one or more focusing point in the viewfinder that lit up in red fall on your subject. So with the lens in AF mode, the camera focus on the subject, the subject is not moving and the shutter speed is fast enough, you should get a clear picture. If not, then may be something is wrong with the camera.

According to Canon's spec on your camera, you can take approximately 53 jpeg, 6 raw or 4 raw + jpeg pictures in a single burst before it slows down to dump data to the SD card. Check to see if you camera is set to take raw or raw + jpeg pictures. Also if your SD card is new or it's been used in another camera before, make sure you format the SD card in your camera (after you upload all the current pictures to PC or other storage device and back up all the pictures). It is also depend on the write speed of the SD card. Non name brand card tend to be slower than those name brand card.

Hope this help.

  Hi Andy!
Well.. I should maybe make myslef more clear. So... ;) When I said in first paragraph I didn't get clear pic. of a steady subject,I was talking about bunch of pic. I took the other day and I wasn't happy with them.
After that I was reading manual, and was trying shoot some steady subjects and they did come most of the time nice and clear.Just I don't get it if lens has IS pic. should come up clear, even I move my hand tiny bit. that's what IS is for... :///
When I was just walking and just stopped, took quick shoot, than the pic. wasn't clear. I know I could shake camera, but as I said it does has IS... I would expect some better results..

My Sd card was formated. I got it brand new from the store. And I set up to save my pic. just as jpg. So I don't know why my camera has problem to write pic. quick.. :/

thanks for yuor help and time :)))
