Photography Question

Heather L. Klepper

What type of settings to shoot in a church?

Hello. I am shooting a wedding next weekend and I am nervous about the lighting of the church. I have a Canon 40d and a I have a 580 EXII external flash. I have used it before in churches but the color was on the yellow side. I have a Sigma Lens 18-200 3.5 OS and I have recently purchased the canon 70-200 2.8 IS. I was just wondering what lens would be best to use? What is the best settings for darker churches?
Thanks, Heather

your colors will be off when you mix two different light sources. Any ambient light in the church plus your regular flash won't quite work. I suggest getting a gel for your flash unit that matches what you have in the church, then set your white balance on your camera for whatever kind of light it is (like tungsten, for example)

If you don't have need for wide angle, the 70-200 at 2.8 with a higher iso and somewhat manageable shutter speed (can't have it too slow) will give you pretty good results. I used my 200mm f2.8 for my daughters kindergarten graduation and it worked very well (I was in the back of the gym and the light was extremely low!). Use a tripod if possible!!!

Hi Heather,

"I am shooting a wedding next weekend and I am nervous about the lighting of the church."

So why don't you take the guessing out of the equation and simply go over there a.s.a.p. – like... tomorrow? – cam in hand, and tripod, and do a test run?
Then you'll KNOW what you're up against.

Have fun!

  Shoot RAW format.
Fix it later

  Thank you for your responses.
I actually got to see the church and take a few snap shots on Saturday. It is dark. I figured I would arrive early to determine exactly what I need to do and go from there.
I usually shoot RAW so I am familiar with that.
Thanks.
