Photography Question

Jessica R. Mitchell

How many DPI does the Canon Digital Rebel XT have?

I've been asked to do a shoot for someone making an album and the only requirement is that the portraits be 300dpi. I've tried searching the internet but I can't seem to find anything about it. Can you help?

Jessica, dpi (dot per inch) and ppi (pixels per inch) are the same. It depends on which file mode you are saving on your camera (large, medium, small). Divide the number of pixels on one side by the length of the print that you want in inches on the same side For example if the pixel size is 2000x3000, and you want a 4x6 inch print. The dpi would be 3000/6 = 500dpi

  Sorry, Ed.

Jessica, ppi or pixels per inch is a measure of resolution, whether it be in the camera, your computer's monitor or a TV screen. Typically, for the latter two, you view at 72-96 ppi.

When you edit in Photoshop or some other program, you'll want to adjust the resolution to ~300 ppi, the resolution expected by most photo inkjet printers. You won't see the resolution change in "detail," you'll see the change as an image size change.

DPI [dots per inch] is a measure related to the amount of ink placed by the printer on the paper. It's very possible that many more dots will be placed on each pixel in the image.

Depending on the printer being used and the size of the paper [final image,] the ppi setting can vary. Using an Epson printer, if you're making prints 8X12 print or smaller, start with a setting of 340-350 ppi. If you're making a 13X19, you might be able to start at 180 ppi. The difference reflects the distance from which the print is usually viewed.

If you're using a Canon or HP printer, stick with 300 ppi, regardless of print size.

  Hi Jessica,

The math conversions and philosophy – mega pixel vs. print size is a bit fuzzy. However, your camera sports 8 mega pixel sensor. Most agree that a print made with a resolution of 300 dpi, looks adequate. Doing the math, your 8 mega pixel camera will yield a suitable print size 8 x 10 inches.

Time for the megapixel printchart again, illustrating Alan's response.
