  Hi Mahavir,

Filters are optical flats. Flat means just that, both front and back surfaces are parallel to each other and both are flat like a pancake. If the filter is truly flat, their will be no optical distortion. We have never made such a filter so every filter induces some degree of distortion, however trivial.

A filter works like a strainer or colander. It allows some colors of light to pass and it stops others.

It’s OK to stack filters. In some applications as many as 4 or 5 filters are sandwiched together. When filters are stacked the photographer must recognize that the possibility of optical distortion is huge plus a stack of filters greatly reduces the amount of light that is able to pass into the camera's optical system.

Thus we avoid stacking filters unless the benefit outweighs the harm.

Good question, keep asking.

  Thanks Colby,

Thanks Coby! I had a successful career, retired now, after more than 50 years in the photo business. I was never what you might call a professional photographer. Instead, I designed the labs and the equipment. At 70, my philosophy is to pass it on. Over the years, so many folks helped me, I have lots of mentors, they are my hero’s. Now its payback time.
