Problem with a specific camera

Being new to digital photography, I am upset to find that my 6mth old Traveler XZ6 seems to have developed a 'hardware malfunction' after downloading the first set of photos to my PC and deleting them from the camera. The orange light is continually flashing, and message 'MEDIA FULL' is on screen. Any help with this, or is it really a question of sending it back for repair/replacement?

  Pam,

I am not sure what type of storage media this particular camera uses; but, most likely you need to format it now that you have the photos loaded on your computer.

P.S. You will need to do that with it in the camera.

  Hi Pam,

The digital images captured by your camera are stored on a tiny chip known as an SD “Secure Digital memory chip. To gain access, you are interconnecting your camera to your computer and copying the images to your hard drive. Note the word copy is key in this explanation. A copy is an exact duplicate however you should keep in mind that the original digital images continue to reside on the SD chip. Since the SD chip has limited capacity, you have exhausted its storage space. If you check your camera manual and/or play with the menu selections you discover a procedure that will erase, individually, an image file. This procedure is normally in the camera. Further, it is normally performed while the camera is disconnected from your computer.

Likely you can command the camera to erase or delete one image at a time or likely there is a procedure to erase multiple images at one swoop.

As to format: This is an in-camera function that deletes all files from the SD card and prepares it to accept images afresh.

Keep in mind that deletion, erasing, and re-formatting wipe out the images with no hope of recovery. Make sure that any images you wish to keep have been safely transferred to your computer or alternate storage media.

An alternative to image transfer camera-to-computer: Purchase an inexpensive SD card reader. Remove the SD card from your camera, plug it into the reader. It will appear in “My Computer” as another lettered drive. You can then copy image files to your computer. I suggest you create a unique folder for each transfer session. In this way you will be creating a logical and systematic file storage methodology.

SD memory is now available in many sizes. Likely your camera only came with one card of limited capacity. A prudent traveler would take several large capacity cards along to increase the number of images you can record while traveling. I personally recommend you take along four cards with a capacity of 256 MB (mega bite). Larger cards are available, check your camera manual, your camera may have limitations as to the size of the card it will accept.

Best regards,
