Mandi, first of all, to upload a photo with your question, you must be signed in to your member center before posing the question. Now to your question. I recommend using layer masking with gaussian blur (if needed) to soften or blur the background. Place a duplicate layer with a layer mask and apply necessary amount of softening. Then, using a soft brush, paint with black to uncover the sharp subject. John

Easily done as a custom action in Photoshop, however, Nik Effects Pro 3.0 is a awesome little plugin that will do it for you.
