Annoying RAW issue

Hey,
Whenever I open a new RAW image in photoshop, it seems to save a .xmp file with the same filename as the image into the folder?.. Why is this?

Eg, I have a RAW file named 1.cr2, I open it in CS3 and then a file called 1.xmp appears in the folder?

Frustrating me!!

hahaha...I call it the rider, caboose etc. The great thing about a RAW file is you don't damage any of the original data when you make adjustment on it...the xmp is simply the file of the data you've modified on the original RAW image. The xmp will always accompany the original RAW file...don't worry.
Let me give you a little story, I edited 1000 wedding photos (started with 4500) in RAW. I then cut/pasted only the RAW files to a new folder leaving the xmp behind. My business partner freaked...and had to re-adjust every photo because when she looked the photos we're as they were when originally taken. The xmp file contained all my white balance adjustments, brightness, exp...etc.

Why is it a separate file? Why not include it in the RAW file itself? There already is an embedded small jpg in the RAW file (which you're looking at when chimping), so embedding data seems not to be a problem. So why don't they embed the xmp data there too. So that you can't 'lose' it and keep image and change data together?

Dude, I don't write the programs I just use them...lol I have absolutely NO idea I just read about it in 1 of my 20 books on shooting RAW and of course from my experience.
