How To Keep Camera Dry

I'm traveling to Costa Rica during rainy season. Is there a way to keep my Canon PowerShot protected (waterproof case, etc.) or is buying a waterproof camera the only way to go? If so, what's a relatively inexpensive route to go?

The most inexpensive route I know of is from Ewa Marine. They make a fairly inexpensive rain hood. They also have an under water housing (more like a sealed bag) for less than 200.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark H.

You can also see if you can find one of those plastic emergency raincoats you put in the trunk of your car for when you need to change a tyre in the pouring rain. They are usually only a couple of bucks.
Get one, cut off an arm, and fix that around your lens hood with one of those wide rubber bands (take 2 spares!) that mail men use. Protect your lens from rain with a UV filter. You need it when the sun comes through also anyway.

If you're going in the rainy season you will need a poncho anyway, so when it pours you keep your cam and gear under that.

Have fun!

Almost every Canon PowerShot camera comes with an optional underwater housing for around US$160-180. Although pricey, it fits nicely with your camera. It's hard case with good grip. And the buttons are the same as on your PowerShot. Personally I think it is better than the Ewa Marine type bag. I had one for my old S60 that I took pictures in snow/rain, at beach and under water. problems are it is pricey and if your PowerShot is an older model, you may not find one that match your camera. Hope this helps.

A little bit more info if you are still interested. W. and Mark's suggestions are good for (D)SLR type cameras. The only Canon PowerShot cameras that does not have a retractable lens are the single digit S series, like S5 IS and the TX series. Even the G series has retractable lens. In order to use the raincoat type protection as W. mentioned, you need to have the lens fully extended and be able to screw on a filter or lens hood. The G series and some of the A series PowerShot cameras allow you to remove the chrome ring around the lens and snap on an adapter (usually 48mm in diameter). Then you can screw a filter or lens hood on the adapter. And then use a plastic bag or whatever to protect your camera in rain while shooting. That adapter ring cost about US$50 from Canon if you can find one. Since you did not mention the model of your camera, I am just trying to give you as much info as possible.
