Strobe effective Ws vs true Ws

Are most stobe ratings stated in effective Ws or true Ws? For example, a strobe with effective 1600Ws produces 640Ws true Ws and its model number donates 1600... Are most brands like this in the way of stating power rating?

Hi Marius, from what I have seen most companies rate by true watt seconds. The Paul Buff companies (Alien Bees and White Lightning) use the effective watt seconds designation which is probably a marketing strategy. Compare these strobes to other companies based on true watt seconds. You can find this information on the web site. It deos seem that Buff is getting away from this as the ratings on his new Zeus system are based on true watt seconds.

  Hi Marius,
Strobes are rated in whatever the marketing people think will see the things. Effective watt-seconds are basically a lie; especially as the manufacturers never say what unit their strobes are compared to. The Paul C. Buff companies seem to be the only reputable company that uses effective watt-seconds, and, as William says, they are getting away from them. Keep in mind that watt-seconds are a measure of power consumption, not light output, so they are an imperfect way to measure light. If you have better reflectors on your strobes it doesn’t raise your watt-seconds, but it does raise you light output. Given that you have enough power you should consider the accessories when making a decision.
Thanks, John Siskin
