Photography Question

SB800 indoors

I have a Nikon D80 with a SB800. I use this quite nicely for fill flash outdoors, but have more trouble indoors. I have the flash set to iTTL, but in low light situations, I seem to need to bump my ISO to 800 or more to properly light the subject and the background. I've pushed my flash to +1, but this seems to overexpose anyone close by. I don't use a tripod, so I try to keep my shutter speed around 1/60 to 1/125. The high ISO is OK, but what if I want to enlarge the photo? Any advice?

Sounds like your D80 is on matrix metering and its flash sync setting is on 'Slow sync' because your system seems to be exposing for the ambient light, which requires high ISO and slow shutter speeds, while the SB800's iTTL adjusts its output – down! – to expose the subject properly.
If you switch to center weighted metering and up the shutter speed to 1/200th (the D80's sync speed) you should find your subjects are still exposed properly, but the backgrounds are considerably darker. That would mean your SB800 works as it's supposed to.

So, if you want a properly exposed subject, by flash, and a properly exposed background, by ambient light, at lower ISO, using you will have to get much more light onto the background and/or use slower shutter speeds – meaning: tripod.
Don't worry about the SB800 iTTL. It's simply doing it's job.

You'll still have to deal with the horrible mix of color temperatures, casts, and hues of the various lightsources...
