Alaska Photo trips - Bears

Is there a photo trip to Alaska (specifically for bear photos) that anyone would suggest? I took a trip to
Africa and really enjoyed it. I've been looking on line and found a few. Thanks!

Interesting question Jim. Alaskan brown bears and grizzlies are protected species of course. More important, however, is the fact that they can just about outrun a speeding car which makes the photographic hunter the hunted. Also, in Alaska you're prohibited from driving on peat bogs and off roads in most of the forests because that destroys natural feeding for the wildlife including moose.

In my experience up there, I haven't heard of these kinds of tours and most of the bear encounters I've been told about have been anecdotal / happenstance and a bit scarey. But what you might do is check with the Alakan Board of Tourism, their Fish and Game Department (what we called "Moose and Goose") and see if they can point you in a good direction.
Speaking of moose, they're pretty docile, as are elk if you can get close enough to them and the dall sheep. Photogenic as well.

After shooting for the U.S. Department of the Interior a few years ago, I can say it's beautiful, truly magnificent place to visit or even live. The tours I've heard about thorugh the Alaskan passage AND up through the interior by car and rail, through the various parks are wonderful expreiences for whole families in the spring and summer months.

But a close encounter with a bear? The grizzly can kill ya in a second and when they're standing can be about 8 feet tall. Brown bears protecting cubs can also be pretty fierce.

Maybe someone else around here knows the bare bones of bear tours.

Have fun. Use a really really long lens.
Mark

James, have a look at the list from Joe Van Os (August, September): http://www.photosafaris.com/Main/ToursByDate_08.php
I've not done the bear trip, but I went to Death Valley with them, and was happy with the results. They've been doing the bears for a long time.

Thanks Mark & Kay...I am on the Van Os mailing list and have found a few others on-line. Just wondered if anyone at BP.com had taken one of them (or other). I guess there is risk whenever around any wild game... one Hippo in the Serengeti was very threatening to our Landrover. The driver got us out of there. Thanks again!
