Smith-Victor continuos lighting I just got a used set of Smith-Victor continuos lights. Its an older set that consists of Model A50-A80-& A100. This is all new to me, can I use a different light other than tungsten? I hear that they are very hot and make the room uncomfortable.

Hi Becky, As I recall, the light bulb socket for these fixtures is a standard household screw-in size known as an Edison base. The socket however is made of porcelain to allow safe operation with the high heat associated with the design intent i.e. lamps double and maybe triple the wattage of a standard household bulb. Now these fixtures have reflectors that direct and focus output light to a specific design angle. Should you replace using a bulb that’s smaller or larger in physical size, the output angle will change, not likely for the good! Can you do it? Yes! Will you be pleased? Maybe! It would be temping to replace using one of the new florescence full spectrum photo lamps. Who knows you might find a workable replacement. Set you digital to auto white-balance and run a test or two or ten. Good luck, Alan Marcus

I have continuous lights also that take regular screw in lightbulbs. I've used the spiral low power ones that really help with keeping things cooler. Do some tests and see how it goes.
