Photography Question

Clarissa Naugle

Canon EOS 40d W/ Canon 24-85 & Canon 75-300

I'm looking at buying this camera with these lenses included in the package deal for $999. Can anyone tell me if these are a good choice of lenses or would I be better off with just the body and purchasing other lenses separately. I like to photograph sporting events, animals and nature scenes, would also like the ability to zoom in on wildlife. Thank you for your help.

RUN, do not walk away from this deal. The Canon 40D street price is about $1400 for the body only. Anyone offering the body and two lenses for under $100 [except if its's a private sale] is suspect.

A review I checked on the 24-85 zoom - "decent not great." Couldn't check on the age of the lens, but I suspect it's an older or discontinued model. Multiply its zoom range by 1.6 for the 35 mm equivalent zoom numbers. You won't get anything in the wide angle range.

You haven't said anything about the 75-300 mm lens, especially whether it's features IS. If so, it's one of the first IS lenses and, therefore, is old.

So, again, if this a private sale - the price might be right. If you're purchasing the kit as used equiment from a photo store - again, maybe OK. If it's being sold a new, first quality - RUN, don't walk away from thsi deal.

This is an online store called Lenses N More, has anyone heard of them? They say everything is brand new and has the manufacturers warranty.

Hi Clarissa, there are a few of these suspect companies out there and I only trust a few online stores like B&H, Adorama, Amazon & Cameta. All of these companies have a great reputation and excellent customer service. You were smart to ask here before buying. I buy most of my equipment from B&H these days along with many others here at BP. As far as lenses, there are eleventy-billion reviews on many different sites that you should read up on before making a decision. - http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/
