Photography Question

Please help me... I'm having a breakdown!!!!!

I posted this question earlier & I am desperate for some help!

Batch renaming in Vista

After editing a recent wedding shoot I went to batch rename the images before buring a CD (!). The rename was unusual (multiple names of some images) so I undid the rename(ctrl z) and tried a redo. This resulted in losing ALL of the edited images!!!!! :( Aaaaah!! They are not anywhere on my PC. I had a compter expert come for a look & he was unable to find them either. He did some research later and found a post from someone in August of '07 highlighting this 'bug'. Has anyone else come across this and what were you able to do! (I have lost a substantial amount of time but not the originals which are on my PC + CD. Luckily)
Following on from this I thought I would reload my cards & start again BUT 2 of the cards now appear to be corrupt!! Is it safe to put them back in the camera and check to see if I can view the images there? On the download it is saying that it can't read the format for some images and for others there is a big question mark instead of an image. What a nightmare!!!

1. when you renamed the images did you
alter the 3 digit extension at the end of the rename.

2. once lost what places did you look for them already

3. what program did you use to rename them, and did you designate a folder storage location for the renamed files.

Sue, do you have an external hard drive or backup system? I would have backed up all the edited photos before all else!

I opened the folder in Windows, selected all, then file- rename, changed the first image name to the bride & grooms surname & pressed enter.
This was the last step before backing up the files. It is the one and only time I have deviated from my normal work flow. Instead of copying the files before renaming I moved them! Below is a post found on the web about this problem. Note the date!!!
Bug in Batch Renames in Vista

Submitted by ryantollefson on Sat, 08/25/2007 - 10:29am.

I've found what I think to be a pretty serious bug with the way file renames are handled in Vista. One of the cool new features in Vista is that you can select a bunch of files and rename them together. This creates a sequence of files where the filenames are the same, but each has a different number at the end - e.g. "Hawaii.jpg", "Hawaii (2).jpg", "Hawaii (3).jpg".

It's obvious why this feautre is useful, but here's the problem: if you undo the rename (ctrl+z), all the files go back to their origianal filenames - as you'd expect; however, if you then redo the rename (ctrl+y), all of your files disappear (with the exception of the first file in the sequence). Now when I say disappear, I mean it. If you try to undo the redo, you get a message saying that Windows could not find the items to rename. Also the missing files don't show up anywhere, not even the Recycle Bin.

Go ahead and test this out, but make sure to have a copy of files elsewhere first. I have tried it with many different types of files, and with different file types at the same time, and the results have always been reproduced. If you are trying this and ctrl+z doesn't work, you might want to try pressing the "Alt" key to get the classic menu up, and select it from there.

I build computers regularly, even though I would not purchase Vista at this time, my band mates (music) have, it's problematic all in most areas.

what's happening in your case is the file name is not being recognized, in turn they cannot be located.
you will have to locate the files by searching folders,

go to:
1. start
2. my computer
3. C drive
4. document and settings
there is a good chance the files are in one of those folders, posible a folder your name or the administraters,
try looking in the "My Recent documents folder"

Hello Sue, Have you tried Irfanview ? It is a free download and does batch renaming & sizing very easily.
Look for irfanview.com

  Hi, Sue,

Re: BUT 2 of the cards now appear to be corrupt!! Is it safe to put them back in the camera and check to see if I can view the images there?

Probably. But, you may want to visit the card manufacturers site and see if they have a recover tool. SanDisk, for example, has a free recovery tool that works very well.

As far as finding the lost images on your computer, look for /temp and /cache folders under both the Windows directory and under the application (PS, e.g.) directory. You might also search by file size or date, rather than name.

In Windows search, there is an "advanced" option to search for only large files.

Good luck! (And make a backup plan. Now!)

Cheers,

RK
