Apple's Aperture Vs. Adobe Lightroom I keep hearing about Aperature and Lightroom, but don't know if they are supposed to do the same thing......I currently use Photoshop CS2 for all of my editing. Are these supposed to replace CS2? Or used alongside? Would be interested to hear what the strengths/weaknesses are of both, if you need both, just one, or stick with CS2. I do need a better way to organize my photos.....I have so many of them.....and think I heard that one of these is good for that. Can you tell me what you know? Thanks Susannah Robbins

Aperture is MacOSX only. Have you got an Apple?

I personally like Lightroom better for now because Aperture is VERY slow and takes ALOT of memory to run on a computer. Lightroom is easy to use, very easy to sort, lets you do alot of the same things, and they're just now coming out with the lightroom 2 Beta for free if you have a serial number of the original lightroom which is very awesome and even lets you do some basic localized touchups like masking. plus it's cheaper.

Oh, Susannah, (sorry, had to do that) - it seems that the "Lightroom versus Aperture" discussion is taking on the same level of religious zealotry as the "Mac/PC" or "Canon/Nikon" debates. In short, they are both designed to do much the same thing - perfrom DAM (digital asset management) as well as workflow and editing functions. They are geared to the digital shooter's ability to take a plethora of shots of the same subject and then choose among them later. I've used both, and moved to Aperture when version 1.5 allowed for the storage of image files on external "referenced" drives (as opposed to storing inside the Aperture database itself, as was first required). The differences between them have a lot to do with the user interface - but since you can get both on a 30 day free trial basis it might behoove you to try them out a bit and get a sense of which you like better.

Imo 'DAM' is really DIM (pun intended).
