Photography Question

Can I get a high key image

Hi All,

I was just wondering if it was possible to get something that would pass as a high key image (portrait)with just the basics of gear.

There seems to be some debate over what high key actually means so what I'm after is a portrait of my nearest and dearest in B&W, white background, and an almost over-white sort of appearance. Does that make sense?!

Can I get this sort of look with a naturally brightly lit room, a white sheet as background, him in a white shirt, a canon rebel camera and no additional lighting or flashes? Would a bit of fiddling in PS help if I started with this basic a setup?

All help gratefully received!

Donna

Hey, just looking at the posts and I saw your gallery. Your photos are wonderful!!

I too am wondering about high key. I have a 3 light set up and a white muslin background and I just can't seem to get it to look right.

I have ordered some white vinyl to try, maybe it will be more durable and easier to keep clean.

Hi Crystal, thank you very much! Though as you can now appreciate portraits and high key are a little way off my norm!! Be fun to try but we'll see what help we can get here. You sound a little better equipped than me so you might be ok!

Hi Donna,

your set up will get you a high-key portrait if you add an evenly distributed blast of light to the background: it needs 3 stops more light than the subject to be really white in your image.

Have fun!
