Photography Question

Tarah Dawdy

Selling photos to small magazines?

I would like to sell my pictures to small magazines or newspapers.. but I don't know anything about it. What do I need to do to get them sold? If I sell an image is it permanently theirs? Thanks! =)

  Hello Tarah,

Your question can be answered in a variety of ways and therefore, too numerous for here. But let me see what I can do to help point you in the right direction.

As far as usage rights, that will depend on the publication. If they want exclusive rights, the price to them will be (and should be) more than limited rights whereby you still control the image usage for other publications.

I’m a contributing photographer for Elsevier Publishing and all of my images are sold to them as limited rights. This works well for me since the type of photography that I shoot is very hard to obtain. For instance one image that I sold to Elsevier for one of their magazines about two years ago, was again sold a couple of months ago to one of their competitors, Prentice Hall, for use in an upcoming book publication.

So limited rights can still make you money over and over again.

Check out some books by Michal Heron. Michal (that is the correct spelling for her first name) was my photo editor while I was working on several book projects with Prentice Hall and during the project she was a wealth of great information for my business. She has published numerous books on digital photography, pricing stock and assignment photography, etc. and I think her books will help you price your work for publication.

Ray
